A CANDLELIT vigil is planned to mark 20 years since Claire Tiltman was murdered just four days after her 16th birthday in Greenhithe.

Claire had been on her way to visit a friend when she was attacked between 6pm and 6:30pm on January 18, 1993, in an alleyway near the A226 London Road.

On January 18 this year, a candlelit walk will be held in Greenhithe to re-trace Claire’s final steps and raise awareness her murder remains unsolved.

The walk, which will begin opposite The Bull Pub in London Road at 6pm, plans to travel to the site where Claire died and leave tributes.

All are welcome to attend, whether or not you knew Claire, and everyone is encouraged to bring a torch or candle.

At 7pm, a memorial service will be held at St Mary’s Church.

Claire’s mother Linda and her father Cliff never gave up hope their daughter’s killer would one day be brought to justice.

Linda died from cancer in 2008 and Cliff died in September last year, just months before the 20th anniversary of his daughter’s death.

Speaking from his bed in a nursing home in January last year, Mr Tiltman said: “It would mean everything to me to find out, after all these years, who did this to Claire.

“It has been a long time, but I've never given up hope and never will.

“I can't begin to put into words how this has affected our family.

“Claire has gone and her mum has gone - there is now only me.”

The retired plumber added: “I try to stay strong but will still hide and cry my eyes out for an hour.”
