PENSIONERS went Christmas crazy at a good health event in Bexleyheath town centre last week.

More than 100 pensioners came to the civic offices, in Broadway, on Friday December 14 to learn what health and care support they can get over the Christmas period.

The event was promoting interest in local health services, the NHS Choose Well campaign and the NHS Bexley Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG), which will take over responsibility for local health services from April 2013.

Bexley has one of the largest elderly populations in London. This makes provision against long-term conditions such as heart disease, diabetes and respiratory illnesses crucial.

Dr Howard Stoate said: “The new organisation is keen to engage with patients both in terms of education and getting a steer from what they see as local health priorities.

“The elderly population is sizable in Bexley and associated long-term conditions are a major issue in terms of care and cost.

“We do need to get the stronger preventative message across, along with the fact that a few simple changes can make a big difference to people’s quality of life.”
