A flurry of late goals brought a 3-1 home defeat for Cray Wanderers versus Kingstonian on Sunday.

It was yet another of Cray's home games this season that left the Wands empty-handed despite having dictated the game for a long period, while keeping and passing the ball well.

Visting goalkeeper Rob Tolfrey kept his side in the game with three fine saves in the first half, all from well-worked Cray moves.

Tolfrey denied Paul Vines at close range on 12 minutes when Cray split the home defence with a fine passing sequence after Leigh Bremner had turned into space just outside the box.

Tolfrey then came out to block Alex Stavrinou after Danny Phillips threaded the ball through.

Ks first real sight of goal came on 29 minutes but as he fell to the ground Wade Small could only scoop his shot straight at Andy Walker.

Tolfrey dived to his right to claw away a screaming shot from Stavrinou, and from Cray's next attack immediately afterwards a Paul Vines shot crept agonisingly wide of Tolfrey's left-hand post.

Callum McNaughton volleyed wide on 42 minutes after Walker's punch-out from a corner-kick following a spell of Kingstonian pressure.

After a scrappy first fifteen minutes of play after the break, the Wands had a let-off when a nod-down from a free-kick gave Andre McCollin an opening to turn and shoot, but he fired over the bar.

The next three chances all came to Cray. On 67 minutes a neat build-up between Jack Clark and James Fray on the left gave Bremner a chance to cut in past his marker, but he drove his shot wide.

Bremner then spun past his marker from a Cray throw-in and rolled a perfect pass to Paul Vines, but a promising chance was spoiled by a sliding tackle to put the ball out for a corner.

That near-miss came on 71 minutes and there was no luck either for Joe Vines two minutes later when he sent a free-kick whistling past Tolfrey's right-hand post.

At that stage of the game not many of the 201 spectators would have predicted that the last thirteen minutes would produce four goals.

It was an unlucky thirteen minutes for the Wands, who were caught by a sucker-punch breakaway goal scored by Small on 77 minutes.

McCollin fired home from the penalty-spot on 86 minutes after Walker had dived at McNaughton's feet and brought him down when Dean Lodge fed the ball in from the left.

Cray at last put in a shot that was too good for Tolfrey - but there were 89 minutes on the clock so not much time left when Clark cracked in a long-range low shot that nestled in the bottom corner, beating Tolfrey to his left.

Inevitably as Cray chased the game during time added-on, gaps appeared at the back and it proved fatal again to leave Lodge clear on the left. The winger took the ball into the goalmouth and crossed low for Matt Pattison to pick his spot.

Cray: Walker, Burgess, Clark, Day, J Vines, Sterling, Fray, Stavrinou, Bremner, Phillips (Saunders 79), P Vines. Subs not used: Willy, Power, Parkinson, Estrada.
