RESIDENTS of a block of flats in Evelyn Street, Deptford, were evacuated yesterday following a suspected gas leak.
Around 20 people were asked to leave the building at the east corner of Abinger Grove while police, a gas company and around five firefighters dealt with the situation, after being called at 12.05pm.
Lewisham Council also set up a temporary shelter for those evacuated.
A spokesman for the London Fire Brigade said: “We were called at 12.05pm and it was over for us at 1.35pm.
“There was a suspected gas leak in the 215mm main at the east corner of Abinger Grove and around 20 residents were evacuated from a block of flats. We left it in the hands of the gas company.”
