Bexleyheath and Crayford MP David Evennett 'disgraceful' for voting against same sex marriage

David Evennett. David Evennett.

MP DAVID Evennett has been branded "disgraceful" after announcing he will vote against plans to legalise same sex marriage.

The Bexleyheath and Crayford MP confirmed he would not be backing David Cameron’s plans to allow gay marriage when the controversial vote reaches parliament next year.

More than 110 of the 303 Conservative MPs are thought to be planning to oppose the bill in what could be the biggest Tory rebellion of modern times.

Bexley Councillor Stefano Borella, who is openly gay, was among those who has slammed Mr Evennett’s decision.

The North End ward councillor told News Shopper: "I think it’s disgraceful - I don’t see why any MP should be voting against it.

"It’s going to give the wrong message as there are a large number of people in the community who want to see their elected politicians taking a lead on this.

"I’m disappointed he will vote against it but it’s a free vote so he is entitled to his view.

"I just feel we should be supporting it and that this is another step forward."

In a statement to News Shopper, Mr Evennett, who is a government whip, said: "I, personally, am a strong supporter of traditional marriage and will not be voting in favour of any changes."

It has been reported the Prime Minister is now planning to fast-track the bill through Parliament and the free-vote could come as early as January.

A free-vote prevents ministers from facing disciplinary action if they vote against David Cameron’s position.

Several Bexley church-goers travel to the gay-friendly Metropolitan Community Church in Camden, where Charlton resident Reverend Sharon Ferguson works.

The 54-year-old said: "I hope and pray David Evennett will reconsider how he is going to vote.

"If not, I think people - and not just the lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender community - will have to think again.

"If their MP is going to vote against an equality vote like this, what other equality issues is he likely to vote against?"

The Metro Centre is a voluntary organisation that meets weekly in Bexley for youngsters to discuss issues relating to their sexuality.

Communications director Patricia Durr said: "As a service provider to the young lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender community in Bexley we’re saddened this is the message going out about equality.

"We know from the work we do that same sex marriage matters to the young people of Bexley."

Evennett get with it please, Its not the 50s any more.

I have an idea for people like you Evennet, if you don't like gay marriage dont marry a gay guy/girl.

I don't fuss over who you want to marry so why would you be bothered who a gay person wants to marry.

As one of Mr. Evennett's contituents I am disappointed and somewhat cross. His voting should reflect what *we* want. Perhaps he should be asking more of his constituents what they want.

I'll start by saying I'm all for same sex marriages as I believe it wrong to discriminate based on people's sexuality.

However, I don't really think it's fair to call him disgraceful. There's a vote on it, and hence he does have the right to vote the way he believes. When you vote in an MP, you're giving them a mandate to do just that. You're voting for that person because, broadly, they will share your beliefs. However, he can't keep every one of his constituents happy. You're probably not going to agree with everything that he does. If you don't like it, then vote him out at the next election.

Is marriage not something special, not,if some people get their way, I know it's an old fashion view, but I like the idea of a man and woman getting married, political correctness dictates that you're not meant to discriminate, and if two men or two woman want to get married then so be it, which, I believe dilutes the whole sanctity of marriage thing.
Speaking hypothetically if it's OK for same sex marriages then who would have the right to speak up against a man or woman getting legally married to his or her dog, why would that be wrong, they would both love each other and would both want to spend the rest of their lives together, but I bet those for and against same sex marriage would be dead set against that.
But of course this is my personal view just like Mr Evennett's view and the views of people in the comments above, and as we all know, just because my view is different to your view, that doesn't make me a bad person, or automatically wrong.

Old fashioned, in a word YES.

I'm all for equal rights, because that's what this issue is all about. If two men or women want to marry who cares, there's lots more important things to deal with.

ksc, you really should change your username to WTF.

Comparing same-sex marriage to **** is ridiculous. You've lost straight away because you are clearly incapable of making a proper argument.

As another of Mr Evennett's constituants I'm appauled - all the opinion polls which only ask UK residents and only let each person 'vote' once (not those run by the Campaign for Marriage by the way...) show an overwhelming majority support equal marriage. His mandate is to represent the views of his constituants, not his own out-dated prejudices.

Except that's not true. Even in the Bible marriage was sometimes between one man and several women; one man and his female slaves (who weren't allowed to say no); or one man and a female child (as girls could be married off by their families then)

So, you see, the law has moved with the times and so should you!

Yet all this equality only seems to work to the benefit of the gay community

There are specific gay pubs (whilst straight people aren't actually banned, it's clear they aren't welcome)

A firm I worked for actually had a "club" just for gay people

And a gay bloke who worked there said to a number of us "the thought of sex with a woman makes me physically sick" . Well obviously his father must have had sex with a woman....

Just imagine if a straight person had made a similar comment

He's absolutely right opposing gay marriage.
There are civil partnerships are available for gay couples as a non religious ceremony.
Marriage in a church is should reflect the Christian message of a life long commitment between a man and women with the hope of procreation.
As far as I know, there’s no evidence from any biblical scholar within the last two thousand years than condones the marriage of two men or women within the gospels.
The Church is not supposed to be 'in this world' and follow the latest rantings of Stonewall and mischief making atheists, but continue the timeless message of Christ's teachings down the generations to be swayed by any social metropolitan fashion of the day.

What's even worse is the fact that its all been covered up for years by those that preach the good word at the highest level.
Lots of people starving around the world and the church is one of most countries largest land owners, lets not even go there about the Pope mincing around around in robes fit for any monarch and red Prada shoes. Ohh the hypocrisy of the church.

A Civil partnership is different from a marriage, even if the ceremony is a non-religious ceremony, if it was the same as a 'marriage' it would be an option for a hetrosexual couple. I know this from experience as I share a house with a man that I am not romantically linked, we wanted to protect our joint assets but were told we would have to marry as Civil Partnership is not a legal option for us.
