CHARLTON pupils dressed up as their fiction heroes to celebrate the joy of reading for Book Week.

Schoolchildren at Charlton Park Academy donned outfits to look like their favourite book characters on November 21.

Other events to plug the power of reading included a workshop, a visit to Charlton Library and a ‘donate a book’ scheme to help boost the school’s library stock.

English team leader at the school, Maggie Carey, said: "We think literacy is an important part of the curriculum. It’s important for the students to feel connected to books and reading.

"Every child has the right to access good quality books and go on to develop a voice of their own through reading, whatever their ability level.

"We want our pupils to have a positive attitude to reading and to find it a fun and enriching thing to do.”

Greenwich Council cabinet member for children’s services Cllr Jackie Smith visited the students – who finished the event with a costume parade around the school.

Cllr Smith said: "Reading and literacy are a vital part of a child’s development and essential lifelong skills. Events like this can help pupils to develop a lasting positive association with books."

Charlton Park Academy is a special school for children aged 11 to 19.
