DARTFORD Police have released an image of a man they want to speak to in connection with a reported distraction burglary of an 88-year-old man.

The pensioner told police he was first approached by a man on October 29 after getting off the 96 bus at West Hill to do some shopping.

The man told the pensioner he had fitted a fireplace at his house in the past but he needed to come back to do a follow-up call.

The pensioner said he did not recognise him.

After coming home at 4pm, on North Road, the pensioner said he found the same man on his door step.

He asked again to look at the pensioner’s fire.

After being let in, the man told the pensioner he could smell gas.

The pensioner explained he did not want any work done to his fire and offered him £10 to leave.

The man then asked to use the toilet but was reportedly seen coming out of the kitchen with something under his arm before leaving the house.

A passport, cheque book, pension book, other documents and £2,000 of cash were allegedly stolen.

North Division’s Detective Constable, Louise Randall, said: ‘This incident involved a vulnerable man in what appears to be a pre-planned crime.”

The offender is described as white, about 40-years-old with short fair hair. He was wearing a thick dark jumper at the time.

Police have asked anyone with information to contact DC Louise Randall on 101 quoting the reference XY/32897/12.

They can also call Kent Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
