Bexley councillors remain hopeful Waitrose will open a Sidcup High Street store after the company’s board delayed a decision on the development.

Plans for a Sidcup branch of the supermarket were ditched earlier this year despite backing by people living in the area.

At its meeting last week, the partnership board of John Lewis asked for more information on the Little Waitrose convenience store model before it makes a decision on future developments. A spokesman said it was working hard to resolve the situation as quickly as possible.

Bexley Council cabinet member for economic development and regeneration Councillor Linda Bailey said: "These are challenging times for retailers, so we take comfort from the fact that Waitrose is still considering its options.

"We still believe a Little Waitrose in the town would prove a big success.

"Waitrose is the type of quality brand Sidcup needs. We believe the company would benefit from a higher profile in the borough and it is just the sort of partner we need to help take forward our town centre improvements."
