Soldier told to cover up uniform on Remembrance Sunday by Sidcup restaurant

A SOLDIER who is set to go to Afghanistan was told to cover up his uniform on Remembrance Sunday by staff at a Sidcup restaurant.

George Flett, an ex-serviceman who served in the army for 10 years, had been to a memorial service at St John's Church, in Church Road, Sidcup, with the 22-year-old soldier.

The pair then headed to the Horse and Groom Harvester, in Main Road, to meet Mr Flett's son for a drink.

Mr Flett, 62, said: "We got in there with no problem.

"We just got a couple mouthfuls into our beer when the manager came over and asked him to cover up his uniform. He said it was against the law."

Mr Flett, from Sidcup, added: "I looked at my friend's face, he was gutted and we couldn't believe it.

"He's a young man who's going to go to Afghanistan to fight for all of us - it's not fair."

Mr Flett says his friends were "outraged" when they found out what happened.

He told News Shopper: "On that particular day it was disrespectful - not just to that young soldier who felt an inch tall, but it's disrespectful to the uniform, which upsets me.

"We were astounded. It's jaw-dropping stuff, you don't expect it."

Paul Molloy, 59, works at Sidcup Working Man's Club and his daughter is the soldier's girlfriend.

He said: "They went to the Harvester just to quickly wet the whistle before they came to the club.

"What would happen if two or three 85 year olds walked in with a chest full of medals, would they be refused if they didn't cover up?

"I'm outraged."

A spokeswoman for the Horse and Groom said: "This was a genuine mistake.

"We welcome uniformed Armed Forces into Harvester restaurants.

"We apologise for any offence caused and we will raise this issue with the restaurant team to ensure they fully understand our policy."

Against the law? I'd appreciate it if the NS or an individual could follow this up and explain *why* the manager thought this was the case. That would help us to understand the manager's thoughts and give more depth to the article.

i know it's silly but it is Actually AGAINST THE Licensing LAWs to serve anyone IN uniform such as police, ambulance, solider etc.

The guidlines of the licensing law doesnt allow the licensee to use disgression, ie if they know they are not on duty etc.

This law was brought into force many years ago to stop uniformed professionals drinking on duty.

That being said... I wouldnt have asked him to cover his uniform at all!

That's not completly true.

This only refers to police officers

It is not an offence to serve alcohol to any person in uniform, but it was to a police officer until 2003. It could be said that a drinking establishment had a duty of care to refuse drink to someone whose job may be affected by the consumption of alcohol ie a taxi driver, but it is still not illegal. It is quite obvious that this soldier wasn't going to drive off in his tank parked in the car park outside and would have sobered up by the time he got to Afghanistan. Hence this is a clear case of discrimination.

In some professions like the Police and Fire Service just being in a pub off duty in unifrom can lead to disciplinary action for bringing the service into disrepute but it isn't and never has been against the law. If a soldier got into a drunken brawl in uniform could be charged by the army and suffer a worse punishment for being in unform at the time.

It applied to a Police Officer until 2003, because a Police Officer in a uniform is still classed as on duty even if he is sitting in his front room watching telly.

To confirm, it did happen and it happened to my son who is serving in the British army with 4 rifles, he is going off to afganistan next year to serve his queen and country so people such as the manager in the horse and groom plus thiose posting negative comments here have freedom of speach and can walk around in London without having to worry too much about backsack bombers blowing up women and children as the fight is being taken to their training camps overseas.
The manager is a coward and does deserve to be sacked he has gone against his company policy is this not gross misconduct?
Harvester will not see me, my family or my friends in the future and I have already written to my company website (we employ 6000 MOD staff) and I'm sure this will affect Harvesters business. an apology from the manager in person to my son would go a long way to repair the damage

I have frequented The Horse & Groom for the last 35 years or so; though naturally nobody knows who I am. Forget PubSpy - he stole my act.

When loyal regulars were driven away by The Horse & Groom 10 years ago and the scum finally took over, who eventually turned the place around? I will tell you. The staff of The Horse & Groom together with Bexley Police.

That said, one hopes that Harvester might consider training courses in common sense and discretion for its staff in future and not spend so much time 'sticking to the book'.

I was merely stating what i was taught when taking my NLC. Which is why i thought the manager had done what he did. I dont condone it at all.

My own father was killed in Korea in 1952 and I think that he would be mortified at some of the comments here. The manager was only doing his job which are hard to get now days should he loose it if there was some jobs worth from the Harvester chain checking on him, how would you know who they are, you wouldn't as they would be dressed the same as everyone else. It's very unfortunate that this very young and very brave young man should have been approached in such a manner also very unfortunate that the Harvester chain don't train their staff sufficiently to know what is or what isn't the current day laws. My hat goes off to the young soldier, may he be safe and return unscathed as I know that as a child of only 5 at the time that my Dad was killed, that loss effects you for the rest of your life. On the surface this does seem a very extreme act but let it rest as we continue remembering those who are at rest through their bravery in all conflict and hopefully not just one day a year.

Sack the manager of where, the Horse and Groom or the training manager of the Harvester group, it's their responsibility to ensure that their managers are aware of current day acts. What is to be gained from putting this person out of work, use him/her as the scapegoat for head office's lack of training, that's just not on. Let's be honest, this is one of the very few countries that has so much respect for our fallen heroes that it doesn't even make the 11th November a public holiday of remebrance, who are you going to sack for that.

Very nasty thing by the pub manager would say but last week the same thing happened in Romford or somewhere "The Bull""? pub caused outrage over there so there was a demo over there last week outside the pub,the pub apologised but people should not tolerate this stuff we need to get a message out that this will not be tolerated and you could have a demo outside the pub to turn punters away,we are in a challenging world and this kind of stuff will be challenged

I suppose the point is - what is the law?

If it is illegal to serve someone in uniform then he was quite correct - as failure to comply could have resulted in him bein prosecuted (and he would not know if it was a trap - similar to where underage kids are sent into shops to see if they can buy cigarettes)

Earlier comments suggest the law has been changed, so it might simply be ignorance & shows the need to keep up to date

Wouldn't it be nice if a contructive move was made by the NS to approach the apologetic Harvester Head office and suggest that they did more that offer an apology but made a significant donation to Help the Heroes fund. The clock can't be turned back now, the damage has been done but I'm sure that this incident is unlikely to happen again due to the publicity however, The Harvester chain should put their money where their mouth is to compensate for the incident.

It should be also be remembered that the manager did not order anybody out, but asked the man in uniform to cover the same. If he genuinely thought that to serve a man in uniform was against the law, then if anything, he was trying to be helpful.

So because one person misjudged a situation, the kitchen staff, waitresses and managers - yes, there is more than one manager, folks - everyone should lose their jobs? Hardly seems fair, does it?

Jobs are very hard to come by these days, so I hope that those demanding the closure will provide income for the redundant staff while they look for employment elsewhere and then become targets for the idiots on here who'll then accuse them of sponging of the state.
