A NEW Eltham man on holiday in America has described the night deadly Hurricane Sandy tore through the country’s east coast.

Andy Forster, a former Dartford Grammar School for Boys pupil, arrived in the USA on October 19 to visit a friend in New York where the weather was "great, really sunny and warm."

He then travelled to Boston before reaching Washington on Saturday (October 27) when the weather started to change.

Mr Forster told News Shopper: "It rained all day Monday (October 29) torrential rain, then the storm hit properly Monday night and Tuesday morning.

"There were lots of falling trees hitting cars, houses and power lines and also a lot of flooding."

The 24-year-old management consultant added: "Washington hasn't been hit that bad.

"I personally didn't lose any power but had to stay in all day and all transport is down."

Mr Forster was due to go back to New York yesterday (October 30) but his transport was cancelled.

He said: "Hopefully I will get back to NYC in time for our flights home on Sunday night.

"NYC seems to have had a lot worse damage than here. "I have been in touch with family at home to let them know."

Mr Forster says during the storm he stayed inside and watched films.

He said: "We went out and bought lots of water as the USA water is linked to the electrics so if that goes the water goes.

"It's been quite a weird experience as we don't have extreme weather like this in London, but quite exciting as well."
