X Factor winner Shayne Ward and Lewisham rapper Dru Blu were among musicians who performed at an inspirational concert in the name of peace.

Release the Peace, at IndigO2 in Greenwich, was organised by Margaret Mizen and Grace Idowu – two mothers who lost their sons to violent crime in 2008.

The amazing parents came together to work on 100 days of peaceful events mirroring the truce instated throughout Greece during the Olympic period.

And 1,000 youngsters were rewarded with free tickets to the exciting gig on Sunday (October 28), for their hard work towards achieving peace in the community.

Margaret, whose innocent son Jimmy, 16, was killed in a mindless act of violence in 2008, said: “Our message is one to young people and it’s a message of hope.

“We will reward them with tickets to concerts or football matches to promote the good in people.

“Jimmy was a fine young man with no involvement in gangs – I never had to tell him off.

“I’ve got nothing to win or lose now.

“The important thing to me is preventing these things from happening.

“We tell kids ‘you are special, and never forget that’.”

While Margaret believes people should go to prison for committing crime, she does not believe enough is being done to ensure children grow up into peaceful adults who aren’t full of anger.

The mum-of-nine has visited countless London schools with Grace, telling their stories and inspiring children to come up with original ideas to promote peace in their boroughs.

Release the Peace last Sunday was the biggest event of the 100-day project.

An eclectic mix of music was accompanied by short films to raise awareness of the consequences of violence.

Dru Blu, aka 22-year-old rapper Andrew McHugh from Lewisham, was close friends with Jimmy growing up and performed in his memory.

Margaret added: “Jimmy was really good friends with Andrew and his family.

“I can’t say rap music is my thing but he is doing really well and he’s always been such a nice person – he was two-years-old when I got to know him.

“He is a really good, positive role model to kids.

“Jimmy would have been really proud to see him on stage.

“I think Jimmy was there with us, loving every minute.”
