A TREE has been planted to celebrate the Queen’s Jubilee and teach children about nature.
Pupils from Pratts Bottom Primary School, in Hookwood Road, Orpington, attended and sang celebratory songs for the event which was planned by Pratts Bottom Residents Association.
Organisers arranged it for October 12 rather than June 2 when the Queen officially celebrated her Diamond Jubilee, because the soil conditions are more suitable in autumn.
The Mayor of Bromley, Councillor Michael Turner and his wife Janet also came along to show their support.
A tree was donated by Coolings Nursery, in Rushmore Hill, Kent, and its chairman, Paul Coolings, went along to witness the planting which took place in the green space opposite Pratts Bottom Primary School.
Mr Coolings said: "I think it’s becoming more and more important for children to learn about nature and about where their food comes from.
"Fewer kids have gardens at home and it’s good for them to learn about nature and longevity.
"We suggested they could come back in 50 years time to see how the tree will look."
