KENT firefighters’ rescue skills will reach new depths when they take part in a training exercise in a 100ft quarry.
The scenario for the training exercise will take place next Tuesday (October 30) at the Eastern Quarry at Ebbsfleet Valley - owned by Land Securities.
It involves the rescue of a "casualty", who has become trapped half way down the cliff face and the training is expected to last around three hours.
Around 25 firefighters from Dartford, Thames-side and Kent Fire and Rescue Service’s (KFRS) specialist Line Rescue team will take part in the exercise.
Using specialist line rescue equipment, crews will abseil down the quarry face to reach the mock casualty, who will be placed on a spinal long board and carried to safety by crews.
Crew manager Ian Hampson said: "Over the years KFRS has been called out to a multitude of incidents where people and animals need to be rescued from challenging and difficult situations, including rescues from height, depth and locations that are difficult to access.
"We are grateful to Land Securities for allowing us to train in their quarries.
"It provides our crews with a realistic environment in which to test their capabilities ensuring we are ready for any type of rescue from unusual situations."
