NEW Ash Green has been given £10,000 by the government to develop its village centre.

Sevenoaks District Council has said the money will be spent on "a programme to attract people back into the village centre".

It is part of a £1m government scheme called Our Town First: Future High Street X-Fund.

The scheme is designed to boost business in High Streets across Britain.

It was launched after the Portas Review, in December 2011, which saw retail expert Mary Portas recommend ways of developing Britain’s High Streets.

Ash and New Ash Green district councillor, Cameron Clark, said: “We are thrilled that our bid has been approved.

“We hope to use this grant money to help us support an exciting programme of events, improvements and marketing to raise the profile of the village centre and make it a more attractive place to visit.”

Sevenoaks District Councillor, Roddy Hogarth, said: "This is a fantastic boost for the village, it is crucial to maintain and improve our community areas.

“This successful bid will ensure a much needed investment in New Ash Green which will benefit the local economy.”
