Father hopes son's killer will 'rot'

THE devastated father of a murdered man has spoken out about the "scumbag" who has been convicted of killing his son.

Jon Bartlett, 29, was blasted in the face with a shotgun by John Seton after the pair met near Chislehurst Common in March 2006.

A jury at the Old Bailey was told that Seton was a major drug dealer who operated in the Mottingham and Chislehurst area.

Jon's dad Michael Bartlett admitted his family were shocked that their son was mixed up in drugs but, contrary to reports suggesting his son owed Seton cash, he claimed that in fact Seton owed his son £24,000.

Mr Bartlett, of Goldcrest Close, Thamesmead, said: "A life for £24,000? I can't understand it. Is that all a life is worth now?

"We always knew that Seton pulled the trigger and we hope he gets what he deserves. I want to see him get the maximum tariff - it should be life for a life.

"This scumbag has affected so many people's lives with his actions."

Mr Bartlett, who runs a greengrocers in Bermondsey, added: "It came as a shock to us when we found out about some of the things Jon had been mixed up in.

"We had no idea about it but I don't think he was involved to the extent that has been made out.

"It doesn't change the way we think about Jon, he is still our son and we love him."

Unemployed Seton, aged 25, of no fixed address, faced a jury at the Old Bailey after police discovered him in a Netherlands jail last year, months after he was arrested for drug trafficking in the Dutch city of Arnhem in September 2006.

He was extradited to the UK and charged with murder after confessing his true identity and telling Dutch police he was wanted for the murder of Mr Bartlett.

He was convicted of murder at the Old Bailey on August 22.

Jon Bartlett, of Portland Road, Mottingham, ran a car repair business in Erith before he was killed and his dad says he had a promising talent for boxing.

His old club, Eltham Boxing Club, now hand over the Jon Bartlett Memorial Shield to the best newcomer each year.

Mr Bartlett, 50, said: "When we were first told about Jon's death we hoped there had been some kind of mistake. Of course we were devastated when we found out how he had died.

"Nobody knows how we feel - he was one-in-a-million.

"Jon was the life and soul of the party and never stopped smiling. Everybody thought they were his best friend - it was just the way he made people feel.

"He would light up the room when he walked in."

Seton is due to be sentenced later this month for the shooting in School Road, Chislehurst.

Mr Bartlett said: "The guilty decision does not provide closure at all. It is just the next step. Sometimes we take two steps back and one step forward but we have to take each day as it comes.

"I just want to kill Seton but I can't. He told so many lies. I hope he rots for what he has done."

If the poor victim wasn't himself involved in drugs, what was the meeting on the Common about? Sorry to be so ill-informed but I understood the victim was involved in some kind of supply and, as such, should be simply mourned rather than deified. Correct me if I'm wrong, though, please. Anyone who supplies drugs is, of course, peddling death themselves - it's a moral tale maybe.

Nobody deserves to take someone else’s life. However it is clear they were both deep in to drugs/dealing and would’ve affected a lot of people’s lives, one dead and one in prison, two more dealers off the streets.

I'm sure you're right, mate, it's terrible to lose anyone close, let alone a son or daughter. As the brother of someone whose own son got hooked on heroin by a scumbag dealer I recognise their pain. I think asking us to keep our comments to ourselves would be fair enough if the victim's father (who has my greatest sympathy) hadn't been so outspoken himself. He has every right to be angry and hurt but, if his son was involved in drug distribution (which he doesn't deny) who is saying "Sorry" to the parents of those mixed up with or killed by them?

its upsetting to hear poeple accussing jb of bein such a bad person even wivout them knowing the real john ! let me tell u just some of the things wot john was like .. at the age of 12 years of age my father was incarserated i had no one apart from my nan john took my fathers role in caring 4 me making sure my schooling was not affected taken and picking me up from school i also was a keen boxer john used to take me to east london 3 times a week after he finished work i owe john so much as if he hadnt been there for me i dred to think were i would be today and i know have my own company john was a role model for me showing me kindness at a time i had no one ! and down 2 a coward he would rather shoot sum1 than have a fist fight just sums up wot a type of person seaton rely is ..! and four people who comment on speculation on john just keep readin newspapers and findin people guilty without nowing john . u will be sadly missed and i will never forget wot u have done 4 me !x

So he did nothing wrong,a brilliant bloke,looked after kids like a father,had nothing to do with drugs,the courts and police have got it wrong,we've got it wrong.
The murderer was a coward who didn't want a fist fight,he shot him from behind and his dad is a midget teacher.
So what,JB was as much a murderer by his dealings as the pratt with the gun.
But,having said that no parent deserves to bury their child,no matter what the circumstances are.

Jon was a great bloke who had his life taken from him by a mindless act. he came from a good family.they have suffered a loss that they only can comprehend. Some of the coments I have read here have been of the most insensitive nature, but thankfully those who knew him know only to well to ignore these negative comments and remember him only with love.

Jon was 1 of the nicest blokes you could ever meet! he was a great laugh and was always there if you ever needed anything! my last memory of jon is a happy one of him laughing. i think that his family have really suffered over this and people should not judge jon because im sure that you're no angel. he affected my life greatly and still to this day i miss him!

I'm disgusted to read some of the comments nosey small minded people have wrote about Jon who they know nothing about apart from the odd bit the papers have decided to pick up on. You must have very sad little lives to go onto a Newshopper website and make judgement on people you don't even know. My dad gave this interview after 2 1/2 years of not being able to say anything and reading all the crap thats been written, I think he deserves to have his say. As for John Seaton, anyone who can stand in front of a family who he has destroyed waving and smiling deserves to be called scum. My brother was my best friend and a true gentleman. When John Seaton killed Jon he took my families life too. Even though the pain of losing Jon never gets any easier I am very proud and honoured to have had him as my brother for the short time I did rather than never have known him at all.

TJ, Seaton accused JB of being a dealer,if this was wholly incorrect the court would have dismissed it as inadmissable evidence.
Whos side you lean too depends on circumstances but,even JBs father admits to £24k being owed(by who to whom) only 2 people know,the whole thing stinks.
I didn't know either, but at least one tosser is inside(hopefully for a long time) and its a pity somebody had too lose their life over it.

You don't know the law, that is not how it works if seaton said alien's done it that would be his choice it would not be dismissed as inadmissable evidence his defence could of been anything he wanted it to be. JB was owed money but he was a car dealer/ repairer. Jon was killed in cold blood for no reason you can not justify it no body can he was not a threat to any one never hurt any one.Seaton it just a silly little boy who was trying to live up to the family name wanting to be a bigshot he took a life of a good man for no valid reason and now he will pay the price so will his family no winners everybody is a loser JB's family and friends being the biggist losers of all. Tammy,i sympathise with your loss but,i can only go by the facts presented in court.
A court is unbias but your views (righly so) are not.
The real world(a court of law) states that your brother was dealing in drugs in some way or another and this ultimateley had a hand in his unfortunate demise.

The worst thing I find about this is the speculation!! When you don't know the facts you shouldn't comment. You all have a right to your opinions but without the knowledge you should keep them to yourselves.

John Seton has been given a life sentence today of 30yrs and this is still not justice for taking any man's life. There is too much evidence so there is no way Seton is innocent. So just accept that this boy is scum , nothing more than a silly kid and he has been given what he deserves. He will be an old man when he comes out, this will still be too soon.

Jon Bartlett was a good friend to many and a great Son and Brother and his life was only just beginning.

How he earned a living is irrelevant to who he was and I am 100% sure he would never have got a child hooked on drugs!!

Rest in peace Jon you are missed every day and always will be. xx

I’ve known John Seton for many years and he is not a scumbag. He got involved with things from a young age, which is a shame as his life has now resulted in a prison cell for the next 30 years. He has been found guilty but I’m also interested to see what will happen at a re-trial. Nobody deserves to be killed no matter what the circumstances but we all know that Jon wasn’t a saint and if you’re going to mix in that world there’s only two results – death and/or prison.

I'm sorry but you have it wrong John Seton is a SCUMBAG LOWLIFE PILE OF **** he's sitting in his cell now and do you belive he's glad he done it? don't think so he couldn't justify it no rhyme no reason. He was only following in the family footstep's Bartlett didn't deserve it. Lot of scumbag's out there that do deserve to be shot in the face but Bartlett wasn't 1 of them.Seton is a long way off from a re-trial it takes year's if he get's 1 at all wonder if daddy is proud of his little boy now? i'm sure he will never live long enough see his son a free man shame on them all they had money Seton wanted a name now he has 1 daddy has a lot to answer 4 it's not good to bring up baby gangster's all that money you'd of thought he would of wanted better for his son.Maybe a good beating or 2 along the way would of helped.
