Lewisham in top ten 'dangerous places'

LEWISHAM has been named among the top ten most violent places in the country and the top five most violent boroughs in London.
Research by the personal safety charity, Suzy Lamplugh Trust, based on figures from the Home Office, found 33 out of 1000 people were victims of "violence against the person" in the 2007/08 financial year.
In this period there were 8, 376 violent offences committed against people in Lewisham - an increase of 314 from the previous year meaning the borough jumps up ten places.
The report comes after seven murders in the borough from July last year to July this year.
However, Lewisham police's head of partnership, Superintendent Lisa Crook, defended the police pointing to a 8.6 percent drop in the number of wounding offences and a 16 percent reduction in crimes involving the possession of offensive weapons.
She said: "The increases in violent crime have been at the less serious end of the scale including harassment and common assault arising from domestic violence situations.
"We will strive to better our past achievements and still further reduce crime, but it should be remembered that for the majority of people in the borough, Lewisham remains a vibrant, exciting and safe place to live, work and enjoy."
Meanwhile the Mayor of Lewisham, Sir Steve Bullock, said: "We will place extra emphasis on working with schools and community groups to help reinforce a more widely recognised social and moral code of conduct.
"We are very keen to continue to involve the local community in setting priorities and we will continue to address any fear of crime."

"Violence against the person" crimes include:
Murder, attempted murder, manslaughter, grievous bodily harm, harassment, common assault, possession of weapons with intent.

Lambeth borough is the worst in London if not England for Murder and violent crimes commited yet it's not even on the list. Last time I checked the MET Police crime stats it had something like 24 murders in the last 12 months.
This was followed by Newham, Southwark, and Hackney which all had the next highest murder/violent crime stats.
Also no mention of Birmingham and Nottingham which would also make the top 10 although no quite as high as the worst London boroughs.

on average two women are murdered every week (england and wales) at the hands of partners or ex-partners
far from being 'at the less serious end of the scale', domestic violence is extremely serious because of repeat victimisation and the pattern of escalation of violence

i was commenting on the mps attitude towards domestic violence
seeking to dismiss a rise in violent crime by saying it wasn't serious violence only domestic violence is utterly disgraceful
i don't have the latest stats immediately to hand but for example a met police report in october 2003 stated that domestic homicide accounts for approximately 25% of all homicides in London and 35% in england and wales

I grew up in Peckham and didn't realise how bad it was until I left and looked at it as an outsider.
People living in these areas don't realise how bad they are until they have the opportunity of getting out and sleeping without the sound of police sirens, arguements in the streets,braking glass, screams, you name it.
I'll ask this question? how many people living in these areas are happy with their children out after dark, and how many sit behind the door waiting for the kids too call for that lift home, or to say they've arrived safely at their friends house?
That's when people are happy where they live?

Bexleyheath. Woolwich, Plumstead and even Greenwich should be on list. All have their youth problems, gang problems and anti social behaviour caused by drink and drugs. We need an high police presence, 24 hours a day, 24 hour PSCO's, stop and search and zero tolerance to gang fights and street crime. With all street crime fights and muggings being fully followed up by the police. People must not be allowed to get a way with it any longer. Decent, honest law abiding people have the right to walk the streets safely at anytime of the day or night with out being attacked or abused. Politicians need to sit up, listen take note and take the appropriate actions now.
