Roadmarkings save paint but leave drivers to fill in gaps

TIMES are hard - and with credit crunched and the jaws of recession ready to bite, everyone is tightening their belts.

So Bexley council should be applauded for their thrift - in saving paint.

When the road markings in Edison Road, Welling were repainted last week after gas works, employees of the prudent Bexley council only repainted the new tarmac.

We can only conclude the faded white road markings and invisible yellow lines weren't repainted to save the council money on paint.

When News Shopper received this photo of the repainted tarmac from Welling resident, Cedric Ghinn, there was nobody available at Bexley council to comment.

But as soon as we can we will ask the council about the road markings and any other money saving schemes it is currently trying.

If you have any great ideas for saving money, why not share them with us by posting a comment below.

Henry, get a life.

No, this story probably wouldn't make it on to the national news or in The Sun because it's a local story and this is a local newspaper site.

But that said, how many times do you see the national news or papers featuring silly stories about cute animals, misspelt signs or people doing stupid things? It's called light-hearted news, which is exactly what this is.

Maybe people should talk about the council on this story!! Just like the responsibility of the council and their trees or lack of them! Today, i hear a huge noise, i then get a knock on my door to see that a big branch has fallen on my car!! The fact that my car is badly damaged is another fact!! But when you damaged a tree you can get prosecuted by the police because its the councils trees, i complained and want compensation and im told that it's not their responsibility!! So someboby tell me about a story on what i should do about that one??!!

It could be that the Gas company are probabley told to "make right" what they dig up. In this case they have to re-mark the part of the white lines that they disturb and because they didnt disturb all of the white line, then why should they paint them all? I know that there will be comments sayng that it wouldnt have taken them long etc, and your right it wouldnt have, but that wouldnt have been down to the Gas company, its down to the Council to maintain roads.

Rich is exactly right, the contractor is only paid to reinstate the road they've done. Its still quite clear its a Give Way, yellow line and where the centre of the road is. Can you image what Cedric's photo albums are like <yawn>.

The utilities companies under the Roads and Streetwor ks Act have to reinstate to a condition prior to the works starting, with large jobs it is normal for a council / highway authority to agree that condition prior to works starting! Yes very boring!!! But factual!

Nice one Cedric. And nice one News Shopper! What a pointless story. Before anyone employs a little commonsense we all start to blame the Council. It is not their responsibility to put right situations that have occurred as a result of what is clearly a utility company that has had to carry out works on the highway (if it was you'd probably be asking why!). Shocking to see the News Shopper has reported this without even checking the facts and is quite content to portray the Council in a negative light through the use of sarcasm.
