RESULTS of consultation over plans to give a town centre a major overhaul have been published.

The Orpington Masterplan has been designed to improve the pedestrian environment of the town and redevelop The Walnuts shopping centre.

Many responses from the public voiced concern over the current run down nature of the High Street and the impact of the new Tesco development.

The supermarket, due to open in Earls Way next year, claimed a new store would help bring people back to the town centre.

Bromley Council's head of heritage and urban design, Peter Martin, says the plan will be redrafted in light of the consultation outcomes.

He said: "Generally we are pretty pleased with the results.

"I think there's a general endorsement from everybody about improving the High Street."

Chairman of the Orpington Business Forum, Chandra Sharma, says he is very positive about the plan.

He said: "The whole idea is to rejuvenate the High Street, to attract other retailers.

"There's always trepidation when something like Tesco comes along, but I think it will bring in footfall and hopefully that will mean more people walk through the High Street."

Suggestions were also made by the public about the need for a theatre, cinema or hotel to attract more people to Orpington.

Proposals to widen pavements and plant more trees drew mostly positive responses, although concerns were raised by disability groups over navigational difficulties for blind people caused by a lack of suitably raised kerbs.

One of the key proposals was to move Orpington Library out of its current Grade II listed premises and into council offices in College Square.

The majority of responses from the public were in favour of the idea, but were wary of the availability of car parking at the new site.

Orpington Councillor Pauline Tunnicliffe says the future is looking good for the town.

She said: "Over the 20 years I've lived here I've seen it deteriorate.

"We have waited a long time for improvements to Orpington so I think we should be celebrating that something is now going to happen and I'm very excited about it."

How many things are wrong wtih this article?

Point 1: Orpington HAD a cinema til it was burned down
Point 2: Hotel? Where and why in Orpington?
And Finally Point 3: More space & trees means more room for kids causing trouble outside macdonalds and grafiti on the tree bowls.
And they paid people for these ideas?
How about this for a plan? Sack said people and save some cash, invest it in the police and have them kick the troublemakers out. In turn that will make people feel safer and want to walk the streets which will then bring more retailers in.
But a hotel???????

So many empty shops and they want to build more??? Whays the point. The High Street has gone downhill, who would want a shop around there? I think the money should go towards things for the community itself. Like a cinema,a youth club, more for the elderly. The council are doing what they want once again, sod us people who actually live in Orpington and shop there. The councilors,I bet they shop elsewhere.

yes, once again another town that the Council thinks will benefit'greatly' by a major overhaul. It won't make any difference( was tried in Gravesend High Street)nearly all the 'renovated' shops are now shut.
The populus is getting poorer.Where do they think all this exra spending, in extra shops, is going to come from.
As Tracey said, a new cinema and facilities for the people of the town. Not new shops and flats, ready for the vandals to ruin, once again.

no one wants to won a shop here. it gets broken into once a month on average and the police do nothing but give you a crime number for your insurers, the scum bag sewer dwellers are having a field day and our so called cops are letting em !

Unfortunately this is what you get when you invite the supermarket chains in. Orpington will become another Tesco-town, a large shopping centre surrounded by a high street full of pound shops. The decline has begun already, with shops moving out in anticipation of the downturn in trade that Tescos will bring. No amount of revamping will work. They should just bulldoze the high street and make it into a big car park for Tesco. Hang your head in shame, Bromley Council, for ever giving the go ahead on this development - of course, it had nothing to do with the money that the council has invested in Tesco shares, does it?

Well, at least we can all expect a REDUCTION in our council taxes, once these wonderful developments have proved themselves and we will be living in 'rich areas' with 'rich' councils.
Time to give back to all those residents, who have objected, put up with not being heard. This seems to be happening in all towns.

What we don't want is just more nice block paviers, street furniture and trees (which the vandals will almost certainly destroy). Those things alone won't encourage anyone to do anything very much, except possibly hang around in the evening causing trouble. We need decent shops and a police force which makes people feel safe and deters the scum. You never see any real police in Orpington, just hordes of impotent PCSOs the low life simply laugh at. As usual, most of the real money generated from the Tesco development will be spent in Bromley with the loose change being left for places like Orpington which are slowly dying because the shops are closing down left, right and centre.

Hotels?? Yeah sure, great idea - plenty of people will want to stay in a hotel in the Town Centre, it's such a lovely place with so much to offer for the discerning tourist and shopper...... NOT!

I have to disagree, it's an inspired idea. It will be like having a hotel in the middle of a safari park - people will be able to gaze out of their hotel windows as the assorted low-life wander up and down the high street attacking each other. All the obese, tattoo'd, gut-on-display, tracksuit wearing cray-dwellers will draw the crowds in. Hell, you could even offer the hotel guests sniper rifles.........

Now can someone sort out Penge as well. Seeing as well all pay our Coucil Tax and get sod all spent on our area. Too many cheap pound shops and cheap scuzzy clothes shops in Penge (Peacocks and QS and show shops that have never seen a bit of decent leather) Please!
