POLICE were called to bogus reports of a man with a gun in Orpington yesterday.

But after four hours searching the area around Elmcroft Road and Perry Hall Road, officers questioning the man who made the original call discovered he had made up his story about the man with a gun.

Officers made a search of the area after police received a call from a man claiming to have seen a man carrying a firearm at 1.57pm yesterday.

The three firearm response units, four police cars and three ambulances had left the area by 5.56pm.

No charges have been brought against the man who made the bogus call to police to date.

Why no charges against him as yet?? all that time wasted by ambulance and police services!! bet the man thought he was well funny!!! wonder if he'd find it funny if he actually had someone pointing a gun at him , but alas no police as they are on bogus calls!!!

Well said Sar

I agree, the caller should be charged & fined! he could have been taking that emergency service away from a real crime or someone depending on that service the guy should be ashamed of himself! better still.. Nsmed & Shamed! so people know just who (among many) took that emergency service away from their friend or family member who needed it!

Tracey, Orpington says...
10:53am Tue 19 Aug 08

,he gets away with it. Wasteing police time, scaring the people around perry hall road, just to get a slap on the hand. Its all wrong.

Jenny Baker, Orpington says...
11:42am Tue 19 Aug 08

I totally agree with previous comments. Wasting police and other emergency services is a crime and if the man responsible is not charged he may do it again if it gave him the attention he must have been craving

Harry Brown, Bromley says...
1:02pm Tue 19 Aug 08

Steady on people. It only says the man hasn't been charged yet. There's this little thing called evidence that police work on. I know it's a bit of a bore but that's just the way it is. They will have to prove this hoaxer did it maliciously and didn't just make a mistake before he can be charged.

Penny, Welling says...
1:18pm Tue 19 Aug 08

Harry, it says that after questioning it was discovered that the man had made up his story? so if the police knew this why did they not caution/charge him?

Harry Brown, Bromley says...
1:38pm Tue 19 Aug 08

Penny, it only happened last night so I would imagine the police might need more time to gather evidence. I would imagine why the man might have made the story up would come into it. Was it a malicious prank or was there something else behind it, like mental illness? It's no good them charging somebody until they have all the facts.

Ray Shial, Eltham says...
3:08pm Tue 19 Aug 08

They should deport him.And his family.

Tracey, Orpington says...
4:39pm Tue 19 Aug 08

Harry, the man admitted that he made it all up. Thats all the evidence I need. So a grown man can play games like that, but if a child did it,they would be carted to the police station, the parents informed and then they would get a formal warning. But the man got nothing. What will he do next for fun then?? Seeing as he knows he will get away with it.

Harry Brown, Bromley says...
5:04pm Tue 19 Aug 08

Tracey, nobody has got away with anything. It just says he hasn't been charged to date - to date. I know when something happens in Eastenders or Hollyoaks, people are charged, in court and sent to prison all in the same day. But real life isn't exactly the same as on TV.

Penny, Welling says...
6:54pm Tue 19 Aug 08

No but they wouldn't just walk away and leave it at that. Was it you Harry? Just you seem very defensive of someone who wasted police and emergency services time, thats what has got people so angry on here and hence why they want to see him dealt with accordingly.

Tracey, Orpington says...
7:10pm Tue 19 Aug 08

Shame I dont really watch tv,but you must if you say that. So Harry you agree with wasteing police time, the neighbourhood getting scared that someone with a gun could be about? And someone getting away with a crime. If they was gonna charge him, then they would of done it then. I think the man did wrong no matter what you say. The police could of been helping solve a REAL crime, just think if you had needed to call the police at the time, but they couldnt help..

Is this the same Harry Brown that is against speeding motorists? If you commit a crime you should pay the price. The man has ommitted to it Harry or maybe he is an illegal immigrant which you like

Harry Brown, Bromley says...
9:44am Wed 20 Aug 08

Simon, you're an idiot. End of. You made yourself look stupid the last time you tried outwitting me so I'm surprised you're bothering again.

Tracey, Penny - at what point exactly did I say I agree in any way with what this man did? I think you must be Simon's sisters. I was merely making the very valid, and ACCURATE, point that this man just hasn't been charged yet. Impatient aren't you?

Tracey, Orpington says...
10:01am Wed 20 Aug 08

Yes Harry,I am inpatient. So shall we let all the people off who admit to a crime??? I have 2 teenage sons who get harassed by the police for just sitting in the park, doing nothing, but this man Did something and gets away with it. Also I live around the area where the `man with a gun` was meant to be,so go put your useless opinions somewhere else. He frightened soooo many people.

simon, Bromley says...
10:30am Wed 20 Aug 08

That is not very nice Harry, aren't you supposed to be a law abiding citizen but that is very slanderous. If you give your point of view across (which you are entitled to) but don't contradict yourself. Harry I think you need help

penny, Welling says...
10:32am Wed 20 Aug 08

Harry I don'thave a brother and am in no way related to this man. No I am not impatiant but wish the police would actually do something useful when they have clear cut information instead of, like in Tracey's case and from my own personal experience harrassing people who have done nought wrong! Everyone is entitled to their own opnion you included, but the majority of people who have commented feel that the police should have done a bit more. The guy should be charged with wasting police time, if he has issues then these should be dealth with too. Phew rant over back to work!

Ridge, Stockton-On-Tees says...
10:55am Wed 20 Aug 08

Wow, erm explosive comments & harry im sorry bud, but your fighting a loosing battle here, i agree police need time for investigation but the guy should be punished for wasting police & emergency services time as he cried wolf & there was no need for it & i can agree with Tracy that kids would be in serious s*** by old bill if they did it so why should it be any different for that prat who made the hoax call?

I'm not going to respond to you unless you rewrite that comment in legible English.

Harry Brown, Bromley says...
12:03pm Wed 20 Aug 08

Tracey, Penny, Ridge - nobody has got away with anything or been treated any differently to anyone else. As I've said repeatedbly all that's happened so far is the man hasn't been charged or dealt with YET. In all likelihood he will face action. If you know the law his "confession" alone would not be enough to charge him.

penny, welling says...
12:13pm Wed 20 Aug 08

Harry, please don't talk to us like children, I know the law I studied it at A level, not university so not in depth, but I know a bit. I was simply stating that he SHOULD be charged. Thats all that we've been saying, having a comment on the issue and stating our opinion.

Can't you understand Harry? Are you not an illegal immigrant?

I think that the police should turn him over to us the readers, we could then decide what punishment to dish out to him & sentence him ourselfs seen as he aint been dealt with YET

Harry Brown, Bromley says...
1:09pm Wed 20 Aug 08

Simon, didn't we go through this before when you were making stupid comments without thinking? Some people never learn. One thing you can learn is how to type properly before you throw insults at me. Or shock, horror, you could actually make a comment on the news story, if you're up to it.

Ridge, Stockton-On-Tees says...

Apart from reading the comments on here, you guys are very strong head people & think you both would be good as politicians.

Simon, Bromley says...
2:36pm Wed 20 Aug 08

My dear Harry, I am sorry you do not understand my messages, this was my point of view like you mention that I am an idiot. Maybe you are right then maybe you are wrong.
As for Ridge I like this guy very strong minded and it looks as though he was a former resident in this area. As for Harry Brown (if this is his real name) aka victor M maybe you should be more consistent with your views, I do enjoy this banter and would love to finish this debate over a few ales

Harry Brown, Bromley says...
3:10pm Wed 20 Aug 08

Simon (if that is your real name), I am always consistent with my opinions because my opinions are consistently right. I was right about speeding motorists, I was right about the Algerian immigrant and I'm right about this story too. I've not sought to defend or judge any of the people involved - I just happen to have given the correct state of play in all the cases. Being exactly right on so many things is a bit of a curse because it seems to really upset people like you so much.

By the way, I too enjoy the banter. Whether Harry Brown is my real name and whether these are really me opinions is something you'll just have to figure out. I'm sure a few ales with you one day would be an interesting experience though!

Ridge, Stockton-On-Tees says...
3:13pm Wed 20 Aug 08

At the end of the day its good to share our opinions with each other & fully agree with ending the debate with a few beers! sounds good to me :-) unfortunatly living so far away from the capital ill have to raise me pint glass to ya both from up north. yes you were right Simon i did used to live in London & used to work in Bromley/Welling & Bexleyheath from time to time, even though i have moved north i never forget where im from :-) have a good-un Lads.

My dear Harry.
This has made me chuckle, I do like having a good debate with you it brightens my day, even my work colleagues have seen the lighter side. Simon is my real name and simple I am not. Is harry on the boat? (ha ha) I am sure a few ales and a lengthy debate would be fun.
Nice one Ridge, do you miss it down south?
