POLICE are investigating a possible racial motive for the fatal stabbing of a former Bromley student.

A post-mortem examination showed the cause of 17-year-old Nilanthan Murddi's death in the early hours of Saturday morning was a single knife wound to the neck.

His family have been paying tribute to Nilanthan, who was a pupil in the mixed sixth form at Langley Park School for Girls, Hawksbrook Lane, Beckenham until last December.

His 18-year-old sister Santhiya said: "He was outgoing, bubbly and energetic and always willing to do things for other people. We were very close.

"He was in the wrong place at the wrong time."

And his aunt, 47-year-old Usha Muralitharan, said: "He was always the one up for a laugh and so helpful. He had no jealousies or bad characteristics.

"It is a mystery to us why he was there. We only know the way he behaved with us."

Nilanthan had been with many of his relatives at a birthday party on August 6.

One of his cousins, 20-year-old Ramya Muraliidaran, said: "All of the cousins were there together.

"We posed for a photograph and it is the last one which was taken of him.

"We are with the police in urging any more witnesses to come forward."

A tribute page to Nilanthan has been set up on the internet.

And a post by Krish Shainthan Kulendran in the St Olaves Grammar School (Orpington) network said: "A loving and caring friend thats was unbelievably sociable.

"Mate, i remember the days you used to come round and produce banter all night while chilling and playing about.

"You will be sorely missed boy."

Police investigation

Nilanthan was stabbed at the junction of Sumner Road and London Road in Croydon in the early hours of Saturday morning (August 16).

Police believe Nilanthan's attacker, who is thought to be in his late 20s or early 30s, had passed him and his friends moments before in a taxi before walking back towards them.

Police are investigating an allegation that racist language was directed at Nilanthan and his friends.

An argument followed before the man stabbed Nilanthan, who lived in New Addington, Croydon.

Police were called to the scene at around 1.35am and Nilanthan was taken to Mayday Hospital, Croydon, where he was pronounced dead at 4.30am.

Officers are appealing for witnesses to the attack to come forward.

And they want to trace a minicab driver who dropped off a man moments before the attack.

He is believed to have been driving a blue Ford Mondeo.

Investigating officer Detective Chief Inspector Tim Grattan-Kane said: "We really need to trace the driver of the cab."

He added: "Also anyone who saw a disturbance in Sumner Road is asked to please contact police.

"It is not known at this time what the argument was about but anyone with information about the incident should call us.

"We remain dedicated to finding and prosecuting the person responsible for Nilanthan's murder, irrespective of whether the incident is racially motivated or otherwise.

"However, should that prove to be the case it only serves to further highlight the tragedy of this young man's murder."

Anyone with information can call the incident room on 020 8721 4066 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.

  • A 31-year-old man was arrested was arrested in connection with the incident on Saturday morning. He has been bailed to return to a police station next month (September).

Another young life taken, and family life destroyed.... When will this craziness stop!!!!

It will only stop when the politicians actually listen to the people who voted them in. I won't hold my breath!

How the hell can we stop all these killings, if only it would stop. But I wonder if it was as bad before todays figures and if so are we making it worse by reporting it. As the people seem to do more when the attention is on this subject.

Anita its all very well in saying politicians need to act but that is only part of it, the childrens parents play a big role in all this, firstly you should know what your child is getting up to and secondly knowning that anyone under the age of 18 can't go anywhere at these sort of time only on to the street, and knowing all the stuff that is going on why let your child out! Its sad that parents are letting this stuff happen to their children!!

Susie, you surely don't have kids as you would know its not easy keeping under 18's indoors!! You can't put all the blame on parents; schools, tv, films all have a part to play, we just need people with authority to fade out this ridiculous craze!!

It's nothing to do with parents, schools etc. If the law says if you carry a knife or gun you will get 5 years but they don't get 5 years most get a slap wrist that was the point I was trying to make. The politicians should make these old age pensioner Judges give all yobbos with these knives etc the 5 years, and I would hope that they would think twice about carrying such weapons.

'People with authority'....You mean like parents.

Or do you absolve yourself of all authority and responibility regarding your offspring?

Prision sentences means a nice holiday from the real world, if these kids truly cared that they would get a life sentence for killing someone don't you think they would stop! Well you would think so but they clearly don't!

Your right I don't have kids but my parents managed to keep me in under the age of 18 no matter how much i rebelled so why is it so difficult for other parents, if I did have a child I know I would do everything I can to keep them off the streets!!

I disagree.
We have the power over voting who ever in...This on the other hand does not give the politicians the power to stop all this.

They will only do something when it happens to one of their own.

What do you mean? Of course you can -if you can't then there is obviously a problem with the way they have been brought up. This is exactly the reason that these young people get into trouble, no discipline. And yes I do have children, one is nearly 15 and one nearly 20.

why are you lot questioning somebodys parenting skills and going on about things which arent to do with the teenager whos just been killed..this is hardly the place..go to someone who can make a difference if you want your views to be heard that much..Stop this needless banter on a website!

Listen to u lot! All of u have gone totally off the topic - all ur interested in is passing the blame on to the next person! Im ashamed! Obviously there is a major problem here regarding knife and gun crime - and instead of trying to solve it as a community and people working together - all u care about is putting the blame on the next person whether it be parents, politicans, media etc! These murders are happening all around us - and no1 is safe! Nilanthan Murddi was a good boy who was simply at the wrong place at the wrong time! Its not his fault or his parents or anyones EXCEPT for the guy who did this to him! I say we bring an end to this as neighbours, a community, as a nation! Lets all work together!

what about if all daily newspapers campaign for a knife and gun carrier to be automatically receive 15 years full jail sentence and using it so would be a definite death penalty?.. i know the PC brigagde will oppose, but surely it can be won in court, else how long it before every citizen need to carry weapons to protect themselves from maniacs? if so I want to buy a gun for myself as it will be my sensible human rights.

Society now is that kids are having kids! the so called parents themselves have no morals or idea on how to behave so how can we expect them to parent their own children.

Ben and P from Croydon - we all want the same thing, and that is to stop this needless loss of life week after week. It won't just go away (especially with the spineless legal system in our country) so we need to find out what is causing it and to remedy that.

Many people here - and I agree with them - feel it is bad parenting, so these comments are relevant to the sad story of Nilanthan Murddi's death.

glad some people agreed with my orginal comment, it is sad that another life has been lost but this debate is relevant to this poor boys death and as Biscuit says we can only solve the problem when we find the course!!

First of all i'd like to pass on my deepest sympathy to Nilanthan's parents & family may he R.I.P. & God Bless.

As for the Gun Crime, Knife Crime, & Crime In General, i would agree with alot of your posts. there is too much of it going on.Police do what they can to clamp down on this problem but struggle when they got lack of man power & huge amount of paper work that keeps them behind their desks instead of on the streets. the Law needs to change & every police officer should have a side arm like the cops in the US do they wont stand for any crap on the streets & before long we are gonna be the downsized version of the US, maybe we might have car-jackings next who knows??, the bottom line is.. yes it all good passing the blame but at the end of the day, how can u blame the parents when most kids that are on the street come from broken homes? no father or mother, maybe a single parent that struggles with 2 or more kids? u simply dont know the history of every kid thats out roaming the streets. no point in blaming it all on bad parenting, cos you will forever be pointing fingers & it dont resolve a thing until the Goverment team up with the community & work together. do u not think that more police around.. on the street with their own guns, in each & every community would bring down Gun/Knife Crime? im sure the gunmen wouldnt wanna be shot them self or have an all out gun battle with armed police in each neighbourhood, would you???? Police need more powers to do things instead of the Goverment who sit in there cosy little chairs with there cosy little lives watching the world go by.. i think that they should walk the beat with the coppers & get a real taste of life outside their chambers! as for those caught with knife's,Guns, & that have used them, its simple, bring back the DEATH PENALTY, & for those cases not so severe, send them on the front line to Iraq & let em play with the big boys out there who fight for our country! seen as the Goverment say the prisons are over crowded!

I TOTALLY AGREE WITH LISA AND ANITA. GIVE THEM 5 YEARS FOR JUST CARRYING A KNIFE 15YEARS OR MORE FOR USING A KNIFE. TOTALLY AGREE POLITICIANS AND JUDGES WILL ONLY ACT WHEN SOMETHING HAPPENS TO THEIR LOVED ONES. SADLY I HOPE IT DOES SMAYBE THEN, WE CAN ALL SLEEP AT NIGHT, WHEN OUR SONS GO OUT.

another tragic loss of life - it's not all about knives, but about the mentality of 'respect' 'dissing' and youngsters feeling it's a sign of strength/courage to attack another person. That's mentality that need to be addressed. True 'respect' is to respect other people, do unto others, that sort of thing. Just writing this depresses me...
