LADDERS were used to rescue people trapped in their homes by a fire this morning.

Firefighters climbed the ladders to get to eight people who were stuck on the first floors of two adjoining houses in Llanover Road, Woolwich.

Another person was rescued from the inside of one of the homes by firefighters wearing breathing apparatus.

No-one was burned or seriously injured in the blaze but the nine people were taken to hospital by ambulance suffering from smoke inhalation.

A fire investigation unit is looking into the cause of the fire which started at around 12.30am today (July 20).

Crews from Woolwich, Eltham and Plumstead brought the blaze under control fairly quickly and were at the scene until around 2am.

I believe that the fire fighters saved 5 people, two girls jumped out the window before the fire service arrived and another boy was rescued by a local person. But they did a good job and thank god no one was hurt.
