1545 - The Mary Rose, the pride of King Henry VIII's fleet, sank in the Solent with the loss of 700 lives.
1919 - An aeroplane was used to arrest a speeding motorist for the first time, in Los Angeles.
1979 - Maria Pintassilgo became Portugal's first woman prime minister.
1992 - Nick Faldo won his third UK Golf Open.
1998 - New figures showed the jeans market was shrinking as children fought to avoid looking like their dads. The trend was nicknamed the Jeremy Clarkson effect.
2000 - Britain's first gay dads, Tony Barlow and Barrie Drewitt, revealed they were pregnant again and said they were looking for one more child to complete the family - but would be delighted if it turned out to be twins again.
