Gang jailed after knife attack

A GANG of six youths have been put behind bars for a knife attack which left a student fighting for his life.

Faheem Javaid, aged 20, was stabbed four times in the back, struck with a rock, punched, kicked and hit with a motorcycle helmet during the attack on June 25 last year.

The gang, aged from 14 to 19 at the time of the attack, can be named after Judge Giles Forrester lifted restrictions which would have prevented some of them from being identified.

Knife-wielder Abdul Yassin-Noor, aged 20, was described as the leader in the attack near McDonald's in Well Hall Road, Eltham.

He was convicted of attempted murder at the Old Bailey last month.

Five others were convicted of wounding with intent.

The attack followed Mr Javaid's 14-year-old brother being robbed on a bus earlier that day.

When Mr Javaid found out he confronted the yobs responsible and punched one of them in the face.

Other youths, who the judge said were either members of or linked to the Ferrier Boys gang, then came out of McDonald's and surrounded Mr Javaid.

Judge Forrester said they then "set about him in the most dreadful way."

The judge explained that each of the six knew Yassin-Noor had a knife, realised he might use it and that this state of mind would have led to a murder charge if Mr Javaid had died.

Judge Forrester said: "On arrival at hospital his body was struggling to survive life-threatening injuries."

He added: "This was needless and extremely serious violence in which a knife was carried and used and in which a young man very nearly lost his life. Each of you bears a responsibility for that."

Sentencing them at the Old Bailey yesterday (July 14), he said: 'Gang membership and knife culture is prevalent.

"The public are right to be concerned about events such as these and increasingly young people are involved both as victims and defendants. Sentences to deter are necessary."

The events followed another incident on April 24 last year in Kidbrooke when Mr Javaid's other brother was also robbed and attacked.

Witnesses had seen between seven and 10 youths taking part in that attack and said a knife was also produced.

  • Yassin-Noor, of Rochester Way, Eltham, was given a 15-year sentence for attempted murder.

Simba Chiuture, aged 17, of Wricklemarsh Road, Kidbrooke, was given a total of eight years for robbery and wounding with intent in the June incident and violent disorder in the April robbery.

Alex Ojerinola, aged 17, of Ebdon Way, Kidbrooke, was given a total of seven years for robbery and wounding Mr Javaid with intent.

Trevon Bert, aged 15, of Brooklands Park, Kidbrooke, got six years for robbery and wounding with intent.

Younatan Frezgi, aged 15, of Ryan Close, Kidbrooke, was given five years for wounding with intent.

Neil Williamson, aged 17, of Langbrook Road, Kidbrooke, got five years for wounding with intent.

A 16-year-old, who cannot be named, was given a 12-month detention and training order for violent disorder in the April incident.

Bert, Ojerniola, Frezgi and Williamson were cleared of the April offence during the trial.

All the charges had been denied.

At first this comment incensed me with indignation! But after thinking about it for a while I could see his point sadly. I recently read a report of 'Old England' a century ago. It spoke of abject poverty, filth and degradation in a slum area of London, and a fatality rate of 1 in 6 due to illness, ignorance and poor conditions, but importantly knife crime was non-existent and serious crime seemed very low if any at all! Lastly a country that has taken political correctness to over-proportionate extremes and has a legal system that is largely operated from non-plussed eurocrats across the water who are impartial to what may happen here in the UK! Those who uphold the law are almost entirely powerless as a result.

The word chav is neither a swear word nor a racial slur, very much unlike the term for black people you refer to.

I know there was that bizarre article in the papers today (which I assume you are referring to) which reported on some weirdy lefty group trying to outlaw the word chav. But it will never happen because anyone of any race can be a chav. It's not a race term, it's about how someone dresses, what they look like and how they behave. Regardless of the class and colour of the assailants who carried out this heinous crime, what really rattles me about all this, is the fact that these days there is absolutely no sense of honour among these youngsters. They gang together like a bunch of feral dogs on a hunt and they have absolutely no shame so that they attack 10:1 . They are cowards because they can't fight 1:1! they need backup and weapons. In my father's day if someone had a beef with someone they would get them in the ring 1:1 and let them spar it out, afterwards shake hands and respect! The difference today is that these kids are very very frightened! There is no control taken up by their elders, thye have to look out for themselves.

Why do you find the word chav offensive? Please explain.

Other than uneducated and ignorant, a chav is also "a young working class person who dresses in casual sports clothing" (Collins English Dictionary). Oh no - that must be like the worst thing that anyone could possibly be called. Imagine the outrage of it.

So r yu saying that kids that wears a bandana and hangs around with a group of people their own age and carries a weapon on their person has not recieved education? If they live on the Ferrier Estate, or any estate for dat matter, does that make them low-lifes? What you should do is ask the question WHY do these kids need to carry weapons? So you come from the street do you? And are restricted by poverty. Is it those reasons for you not receiving the FREE education this country offers? Bull! Get off the street and into honest work! Anyone who wants to has an opportunity to climb out of the mire and make something of themselves. A decent and honest, hardworking person is a hundred times better than a rich man or a sloth! At least they have been sent to prison and are off our streets. This should be a lesson to others.These attacks have to stop. If they want to fight put them in the army and send them to Iraq or afghanistan. Perhaps this should be part of there parole agreement when they are released. All they are doing are ruining there lives and futures as they will have no prospects.

why don't all you racist people get a job or do something with your life. Yes l am a WHITE person and l am a youth worker. l work with white and black kids. WhY is it that the black kids l work with all get straight A in their school work and are accepted in the best University in the country? Not on tax payers money but money that their parents have worked for. 2 of them are now going to top Medical schools. Why put all black kids in the same shoes. If a black doctor wanted to operate on your dying white child l bet you would not say no would you rob??? You have a lot of hate in you and you get angry at others showing hate. You have no leg to stand on and that is why everyone in my office full of white people are laughging at you right now. Really hope that you and the other racists are not grown, that would a joke. A child l might understand a grown man, then mate l am very worried for you. White people mug, kill and steall as well. it depends on what area you live in. Are black people to blame also for the deaths in white areas. Or is it all right that white people can kill???

Well done Lucy Ann for trying to sort out the mess that some of the kids get into. A ray of light here amongst a seething mass of hate, revenge and just plain old evil. God bless and protect you.
Yes these kids need punishment. Nobody thank God was killed.
They need to be set straight, have a sense of worth instilled in them, an honest set of values and be guided by someone who truly cares & has a love for them.
The vile attitudes I can see being vented here will only reap more of the same. Retaliation will only bring about revenge and an ever depressing cycle until someone stands up with strength to overcome that urge like Jimmy Mizzen's parents and stops it in its tracks.
With the kind of attitudes here it's not surprising that kids are of low self esteem and get angry and clash with each other and anyone else who gets in their way.
The answer is I believe:
1. Give them a real deterrent which they will fear which they'll see if they kill or badly injure another.
2. Carry out the threat. They want real firm boundaries not soft cotton wool ones.
3. Teach and show them firm family values such as honesty, respect, loyalty, truthfulness, trustworthiness, compassion, kindness, friendship and forgiveness.
4. Show them the jail, the sadness, the grief that they will find in their short life ahead if they carry on against the opposite if they turn their life around.
5. Parents should be accountable, if not already, if they have been negligent.
6. The media, tv, video and music scene should be more tightly censured to prevent kids being exposed to stuff that they are not able
