RESIDENTS opposed to plans to build a giant new Tesco store in Bexleyheath have started their campaign against the project with a protest meeting.

More than 100 people turned up to the meeting in the Scout headquarters in Mayplace Road West, Bexleyheath, to voice their concerns.

The meeting was chaired by Erith Road resident Claire Summerfield and speakers included Bexleyheath and Crayford MP David Evennett, ward councillor Simon Windle and prospective Labour party candidate for Bexleyheath and Crayford Howard Dawber.

The residents hope to form a new group, the Bexleyheath Community Involvement Association (BCIA), to present a united front to fight the plan to build the megastore, which would be up to seven storeys high, on the site of the former Woolwich headquarters in Erith Road, Bexleyheath.

An 11,000 sq m store with 400 homes built around and above it feature in the plans.

People are worried about the extra traffic the store will bring to the narrow roads surrounding the site, the density of the proposals and the effect on other local businesses.

The meeting heard estimates the store would need 100,000 customers a week to break even and it would attract 1,000 cars and 100 lorries in a 12-hour day.

Residents have used website tescopoly.org to research the impact of similar stores elsewhere in the country.

After Tesco confirmed it had lodged a planning application with Bexley Council, residents were urged to write letters of objection as soon as possible by Ms Summerfield.

Mr Evennett and Cllr Windle told residents they felt the site was inappropriate for a megastore and said they opposed the project on traffic and environmental grounds.

Mr Dawber agreed, saying: "If it goes ahead, we will lose the chance to have a more comprehensive redevelopment of the Bexleyheath centre area, possibly forever.

He pledged to work with the Tories to defeat the proposals.

To find out more about joining the new BCIA, email tescono@googlemail.com

"100 people attended the meeting" ... is that all? Hurry up Tesco's I can't wait. It's about time we had a decent supermarket in the area. And as for the traffic, its a busy road anyway so it won't make any difference.

I agree, about time bexleyheath had a tesco, anything other than another rip off sainsburys! I was bemused as to why they built the sainsburys in the broadway as the one in crayford is so near! welcome to bexleyheath tesco!

You people should beware the Tesco trap.

Tesco seems to be in the process of building loads of massive stores across the country to kill off the small local independent stores such as greengrocers and butchers who can't compete.

The next phase will be to wage war against the other supermarkets through measures such as ruthless price cutting to drive them out of areas where Tesco are based.

After this, when Tesco are the only surviving big supermarket chain, they will be able to whack up prices, hold consumers to ransom and suffocate the market.

It's all fine and dandy now having these lovely new Tesco stores appear everywhere across the area, but what's it going to be like in five or ten years' time?

I read in the papers this week, people are cutting back on their food bills so that they can put petrol in their cars instead, they have to make a choice.

I can't see the logic in creating yet another supermarket as people these days don't seem to have the luxury of choosing where to shop! That's why Aldi and Lidl's profits are up, people are turning to them because we are experiencing very hard times at the moment.

I for one can't wait if they build a Tesco Megastore in b-heath, the nearest one is Ashford which I have been to a few times but it is a long way to go, they do so much other stuff than a normal store, I hate Sainsbury's and always try to steer clear because of high prices and poor selection but it's either that or ASDA, which has lower prices but it a nightmare of a shop not sure which is worse at the moment

Mike, Bexleyheath says...

Good for you if you want a Tesco in Bexleyheath. Why they can't extend Ruxley store I don't know. Mega stores like this should be built on purpose built RETAIL areas NOT in residential areas where the boundary will be spitting distance of people's houses. You think Erith Road is busy now. Just wait and watch the increase in traffic and when you want to drop your kids at school, go onto the A2 or M25 for Bluewater you wont be able to move. Also how about the response times for emergency vehicles that use this road?
Folks, this store is going to be the size of the Thurrock one. Do you really want the associated air pollution killing your kids ?

ajk, Bexleyheath says...

Tesco are making fools of all of you... they said initially that this is to clawback Bluewater shoppers...

BLUEWATER = mainly affluent shoppers
TESCO = mainly chavs

There will also be an extra 400 hundred homes taking up valuable places in our local schools, GP Surgery and dentists, so more waiting lists for all you short sighted imbecillic people!!

The Blower, Bexleyheath says...
9:54am Thu 3 Jul 08

Yeah, these are the same residents that hated the Woolwich being there! Get on with it, if you didn't want to be near shops then move.

Interesting that the Cllr should say "the site was inappropriate", rather than Tesco was inappropriate for Bexleyheath. They wouldn't be setting up a storm, then saying it's OK we've solved the problem.. Tesco's will now build on the civic offices! Surely they wouldn't would they???

Mr Blower - in the current downturn in the housing market I would expect you to be a bit more sympathetic.

I have had a cunning plan, we find John Stewart and force him to buy back the Woolwich from Barclays, we then do "ranch" in reverse and get everything back on woolwich systems. We then sue Barclays for stealing our openplan product and it's back like it was before 2000.

Sorted.

This makes me laugh... you say Tesco will destroy local butchers and greengrocers. Can you tell me where they are in Bexleyheath?

You are objecting on environmental grounds... well what is the environmental impact of having to drive to Lakeside instead? You people should stop moaning.

Bexleyheath house prices are more expessive than everywhere else, you get all the council money invested in your local shops and you have the cheek, yes cheek, to moan!

If you don't like it - move to Sidcup or Welling, where the council have produced high streets of boarded up shops!

There seems a lot of anger on both sides here. I propose a truce - let's sit down with Tesco over a nice cup of herbal tea and try to reach a compromise. Perhaps a small Tesco Metro, a community hall and some allotments. Tesco could sponsor the lot, and get great publicity from it. They could even buy the produce from the allotment holders. Then we could all pile into the community hall for some country dancing and a glass of parsnip wine.

100 people attending a meeting is not representative of the People libing in the catchment area.Tesco will bring jobs and a much needed quality shopping experience to the location. As for requiring 100000 - this figure is invented. The stores turnover to make it viable is based on product mix The Retail sector average supermarket spend per person per week inclusive of non food items ( which Tesco will stock) is for 2007 - £48.54.

The other figures of 1000 cars and 100 lorries in 12 hrs( nearly all Tesco deliveries are supplied from our depots, thus reducing direct delivery and are trucked at night}has been invented by the organisers of this meeting - clearly people with their own selfish agenda, people who cannot see forward and are resistant to any sort of progress and change.

Think you are right... typical "not on my doorstep" responce from them all. Having said that I don't think it is the best site to build such a store on, simply based on the road layout there. The shuttle bus to the local stations (hopefully Bexleyheath and Barnhurst) is an excellent idea though. It's about time someone linked the stations with the highstreets.

It's about time we had some decent shops in Bexley. If Tesco can trigger their arrival then all the better.

Hopefully Tesco's being in Bexleyheath will trigger the Welling branch being bulldozed... that place is an absolute dump and a disgrace to the Tesco brand.

Sure in it's current state it won't be able to compete once the Morrisons opens on the old CO-OP site in Welling!

Your fears are unfounded.A store of this size would receive around 6-10 Articulated lorries per day and atound 10-12 small direct supplied vechiles.Evening deliveries are the norm.Night time deliveries would not happen for a site in this type of location.

It is normal that there are usually a few highly vocal objectors to plans at this stage who are highly unrepresentative of the majority of people living in the area.

I don't knwo where you are getting your information from, BUT IT'S WRONG!

An 11000 sq metre store needs 100,000 customers a week, that's 1000 cars per hour, 100+ HGV lorry deliverys a day

All this has been independently verified by www.tescopoly.org

And local supermarkets Erith Morrisons and Bexleyheath Asda mangers haver verified these figures also... they should know.

Where are you getting your figures from Mike... do you work for Tesco PR department by any chance?

I suggest that you get the facts from a independent source as what you have written is totally inaccurate.
The source you list TESCOPOLY is anti Tesco and provides inaccurate information deliberatly.
Managers from other companies would not verify these figures as it would be against their policy. If however this is the case I challenge you to ask them to provide written signed letters to the effect so that a sensible debate can be held.

If you really want to see hom many lorries and cars enter a TESCO during the course of a day (and night) I suggest that you visit two or three of a similiar size and count them over a week. You will then see that all the info you have provided is completely inaccurate.

I look forward to you submitting some accurate information.

These have been independently verified at another Tesco store of 7000 sqm with an accurate count of 876 cars per hour (not the lower misleading trip rates per square metre that you Tesco people like to quote)!

The Bexleyheath Tesco will now be a massive 16,000 sqm so do the sums and you will now get an extra 1600+ cars per hour and 120+ HGV's (38 Tonne) in an already congested area...

Toffee - I like Tesco, I shop in Tesco, I even have Tesco Shares. But this build shouldn't be allowed in a residential area.

If you work in Tesco then you should know that a 16,000sqm megastore should be in a retail park... not surrounded on all sides by houses and backing on to residents gardens.

If you don't believe me about the amount of traffic generated then stand outside Tesco in Thurrock (a third smaller than this megastore) and count the cars in like we have... nothing like first hand experience to get all the proof you want... (what are the traffice count figures you are going to make up by the way)

On a lighter note, I hear that Morrison is also looking at buying a shop in Bexleyheath. Not sure where though.
