Butcher chain gets historic status

A FORMER butcher chain has had two of its historic sausage shops listed.

Kennedy's butchers was in business for more than 130 years before the company finished trading last Christmas - to the sadness of many News Shopper readers.

The family-run chain had nine stores across south east London, including Bromley, West Wickham, Penge and Deptford.

The chain's old premises in Camberwell and South Norwood, which date from 1923 and 1926 respectively, are to receive Grade II listed status.

The two shops boast a host of art deco features such as engraved glass, tiling and sunburst lights.

Culture Minister Margaret Hodge said: "I grew up in South London.

"In those days shopping was a rich and varied experience, with hundreds of individual shop-keepers and scores of small chains each offering a distinctive choice and a varied experience.

"It's fantastic to be able to preserve a little bit of that history and brilliant to find shops dating from the Victorian or early 20th century which have not been changed beyond recognition by refurbishment."

She added: "The great British banger has been a staple of our diet for centuries.

"It is right that these wonderfully preserved sausage shops should get the additional protection - an extra skin, if you like - that listing provides."

Kennedy's began trading in Peckham in the 1870s.

Company director Chris Kennedy told the News Shopper last year that the chain was closing due to an increase in overheads and a decline in trade.

Despite customers' disappointment Kennedy's said there was no chance they could have stayed open.
