Teacher accused of pupil ‘retard’ insult
A SCHOOL has launched an investigation after a pupil with special needs alleged a teacher called him a "retard".
Fourteen-year-old Connor Heron claims he was insulted by a teacher during a class at St George's CofE School, Meadow Road, Gravesend, last Wednesday.
Connor, who suffers attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), Tourette's syndrome and obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), told his mother about the incident. She says she then complained to the police.
Jodie Heron, 39, of Old East Road, Gravesend, said: "My son was making some sort of noise in class and was told to shut up by the teacher.
"Another student explained to him he has special needs and the teacher said Oh, so you are a retard'."
Mrs Heron reported this to the police the following day and was advised to go to the school to request an apology from the teacher.
However, when she went to the school the staff there denied her access to the building.
She says this left her feeling "livid" and she is now demanding the school sacks the teacher and improves the way it deals with pupils with special needs.
Mrs Heron said: "My son should be given support. He shouldn't be discriminated against and humiliated in front of his friends.
"The teacher should lose his job and the school should provide special training for teachers who
deal with students with special needs."
Mrs Heron claims this is not the first time her son has been insulted by a teacher.
She said: "There was an incident in April, before half-term, when Connor was making a tapping noise on the table.
"The teacher asked him to stop, so he apologised.
"But then he continued to tap. The teacher said Are you special needs or something?'"
Because of this, Mrs Heron suspects other pupils with special needs at the school may have been insulted by staff.
She would like their parents to call her on 07864 972444 so they can take action together.
A school spokesman said: "The school is following its usual proceedings in investigating the concern raised."
A spokesman for north Kent police said: "Officers are investigating the incident and as a result we cannot comment further at this time."

A teacher in my daughters school was acting like he was disabled and when my daughter asked him what he was doing he said 'I'm being a retard'. My daughter went absolutely mad! She has a disabled sibling and does not find behaviour like this acceptable. So it does go on in schools from teachers.

Regardless of what the teacher allegedly said, with all those medical conditions, shouldn't the child be in a school for children with special needs?

As a school governor many of the discipline issues that lead to exclusions that I have to deal with are due to pupils being in schools that are not right for them.
Many parents also feel the same.

There are approximately 10-12 special needs children in every mainstream school.
To Janine:
The word 'retarded' is an abusive term that should never be used. Like the use of certain words can be seen as racist or sexist. This word is discriminating. The accepted term is disabled.
As for the story - I fully back Jodie Heron, the teacher should be sacked. There is no place in this world for teachers who can be so cruel and hurtful.

Vern and Janine, you should be ashamed of yourselves, disabled or special needs children are entitled to schooling and a good quality of life no matter what is wrong with them, how would you feel if it was your child and people were making disgusting comments like the ones you made ? Have a heart, keep your vile opinions to yourself, and before anyone starts shouting about "freedom of speech" think about the mothers feelings for once !

How could you believe what was said. A qualified teacher would not refer to no pupil in that manner. However, You should ask for extra support to keep your child focus in lessons instead of distrupting it. If the teacher was sacked what good would it be for other pupils?

Perhaps Mrs Heron would like to have a chat with the parents of non 'special needs' children whose education is constantly disrupted by those poorly behaved and poorly parented brats with the mythical ADHD.

Just because a teacher is qulified does not mean they are above being spiteful and nasty.
You just have to read the comments here to see the negative feelings of other rational adults towards disabled children.
Qualifications don't come into it.

To Clockwatcher:
I would not say that to a parent of Down's child, since you ask. There is a lot of debate about ADHD and there are serious doubts regarding the way it's prognosis and definition. Many children 'diagnosed' with the condition are simply displaying behaviour caused not by this condition, but by diet, lack of routine, lack of exercise. In short, poor parenting. It is the attitude of blame someone else parents that disgust me, which helps support a drugs industry that lobotomises children unecessarily in our schools.

I am a parent of children at both secondary school and primary school. A short while ago schools in Bexley sent letters to the parents letting them know how many special needs places were going to be made available at the schools. My son has Ehler Danlos Syndrome, he has a high IQ but has difficulty in writing and walking and suffers multiple dislocations. It took over a year for the school to obtain an AlphaSmart word processor for him. How are they going to cope with children suffering from a wide range of conditions including varying degress of autism. Because my son suffers from physical disabilities we have found it difficult to get support. We spend over £3000 a year on wheelchairs and gel packs. We do not claim any benefits and don't even have a blue badge for the car. We are lucky I suppose but it could be much worse. I feel pity for the parents of children who are denied an educaton tailored to their childrens needs, which can only be provided in special schools.

I completely agree with you Danni, and sympathise with your predicament. Teachers in mainstream education are not qualified to deal with the demands and needs of students with [bold]genuine[/bold] disabilities - mental or physical. You sound like you are dealing with the situation sensitively and admirably - unlike Mrs Heron.

Some children are naturally disruptive, aggressive, rude and foul tempered, but the majority would not be diagnosed with anything other than a poor upbringing.
For a child to be diagnosed with any mental disability they will have to endure approximately 3 years of various tests and assessments with child psychologists, speach and language therapists, peadiatritions and SENCO's. It is not one person that decides on a child's diagnosis but a team of professionals.
They can't all be wrong.

A teacher should not belittle a child in front of his/her peers.
A teacher should be a role model for the children.
This teacher has shown the class that it is ok to discriminate against disabled children.
This teacher should be sacked.

I can accept autism because I have seen [bold]Rain Man[/bold] but ADHD is a term used by parents who have failed to teach their children how to behave properly.
When ADHD used to be known as 'naughty', the best cure for this behaviour was a smack on the bottom or across the back of the legs.
Believe me, it worked wonders and didn't cost the taxpayer a penny!

my daughter went to a school and was bullied. I eventually had to remove her from the school after much appealing, and was told that the boy in question doing the bullying had ADHD and autism. Nothing to this date has been done and he even strangled a little girl at school. Something has to be done as other children in the school are now targeted by this bully. I can sympathise with this lady, but there should be somewhere for these children to learn with extra carer's available during the day

I'm sorry that your child was bullied by a child at school - the problem however lies with the school and their management of the situation. It must have been a very distressing time for you all. I hope she is now settled in her new school.

ADHD reminds me of that other old favourite - dyslexia.
Children who were once quite rightly considered to be less academic or thicker than the clever ones are now labelled dyslexic.
It is utter claptrap and another get-out clause invented by the middle classes to explain why their cherubs still can't read by the time they start secondary school.

Whilst I do not always agree Erastus. I must admit, I too feel that ADHD is just a trendier and more "PC" term for being extremely naughty. Why is that so many children are classified with this disorder, when years ago the ADHD term was not even used then, it was called being unruly and naughty. Dietary, lack of discipline, more watching TV etc.. to me are what causes this disorder. If more people stopped giving into their child by letting them have sweets, Cola, Squash (all the time), letting them watch too much TV etc.. there would be a remarkable difference in that child's behaviour. I know that this is going off the article in question, so I will comment on that. Sacking a teacher is not the way to handle things, more money into providing facilities for children's education who are deemed to be special needs. It is also not fair on other students who are also subject to this disruption in class. Obviously, if the article is correct than the Teacher should be reprimanded and hopefully the school board will be able to put something into place that means that Teachers and their Assistants are able to interact with the students better, whether they be "Mensa IQ" or "Special needs".

I will not be drawn into another slanging match over disabled children.
Until you have personal experience of being a parent of a special needs child, or have qualified as a psychologist you have no idea what you are saying.
Your comments are narrow minded and discriminatory against disabled children.
Many things were not known 'years ago' that are now, it's called PROGRESS and DEVELOPMENT something some of you need to do.
I'm ashamed for you all.

So why isn't this child in a special needs school? Some schools also cater for special needs children. I used to be a teacher and the tapping noise or any constant interference within a class room is extremely disruptive, not just for the teacher but also for children who [bold]want[/bold] to learn. Tapping away with pens, shoes or otherwise is an extremely irritating sound and looses your trace of thought. I do believe in free of speech, but the mother has to take on board that her child, if he does have the above disabilities should take this into account and [bold]NOT[/bold] suddenly demand the teacher be sacked. Ridiculous!

According to Clockwatcher, ADHD is 1. A proven condition 2. Enough to classify a child as 'disabled'.
ADHD has never been proven to exist as a medical condition and therefore to classify a child as 'disabled' on such flimsy grounds is spurious to say the least. ADD/ADHD is an industry in this country - and it is an outrage. ADHD is the 'disease du jour' of British school children. ADD/ADHD is a popular diagnosis because it removes responsibility and guilt from parents. It is also convenient for schools - easy way to explain poor behaviour to inspectors. It is convenient for educational psychologists who are effectively paid for diagnosing. It is convenient for drug companies who earn millions for feeding ritalin to children. It provides a neat and cosy paradigm that offers children who undoubtedly have problems nothing but a label that fails to address the root causes of the behaviour in the first place.

As the founder of Bromley-ADDvice.co.u
k I am very concerned about this incident.
We live in a country that insists we have 'inclusive' education where all abilities are mixed. Teachers are not trained how to cope with special needs children, they do not have the resources as the class sizes are huge for children without special needs!
This is [bold]bullying[/bold] & is not to be tolerated by anyone let alone a child with multiple problems. Special ed schools are very thin on the ground & places at them are so oversubscribed. In the perfect world all children would be supported in schools & educated to reach their full potential. Sadly this is not a perfect world.
I am also saddened by some of the readers comments who I am sure would not name- call a child in a wheelchair who does not have hidden disabilities or to disrespect the mother of Connor. [bold]Shame on you.[/bold] Now to those people who have made their thoughts on ADHD....Before you comment about a biological medical condition please get informed as it is a recognised disability & if you would like to know more about it I would be happy to tell you.I wish ADHD etc.. was just a name for naughty kids if that was the case I would not have families crying out for help, instead I support them with their children.
Children with ADHD who are diagnosed & treated in early childhood have the best chance of a successul education & will grow into successful adults. Ignorance, bullying & lack of support will make any medical condition worse!

1. Kelly, your child sounds just like any other to me, so why are you trying to stick a label on him?
Judging by your own spelling though, you were probably labelled dyslexic as a child, not thick.
2. ADHD SUPPORT: Obviously, you will support ADHD because it is a nice little earner for you and you are more than happy to stay firmly sitting on the bandwagon.
I bet the kids love you when you defend their every naughty little action. It is a pity that all you are doing is harm because they will think it is the normal way to behave.
Today's HDHD 'sufferers' are tomorrow's criminals.

I beg to differ with those who claim that ADHD exists as a medical condition. The symptoms associated with ADHD exist, certainly. That does not validate the existence of the condition. Anyway that's another debate and this isn't the forum. What I would say to parents who might be worried about their children's behaviour is to at least consider the possibility that there might be other causes, such as poor diet and lack of structure in their child's life. To passively accept diagnosis is to expose your child to the possibility of being fed debilitating drugs like ritalin. This is happening all over the country and it is scandalous.

Not that it really matters though, as neither conditions really exist.

And how is ADHD diagnosed in this country? On the basis of a 'questionnaire'. Unbelievable. A child completes a questionnaire and then has his/her brain pickled in Ritalin. Yes Ritalin -nothing more than child abuse on prescription.

ADHD has come about because we don't take enough time to smack our kids properly, when was the last time you saw a little brat getting a nice hand across the backside for being annoying ??? ...as we are not allowed to smack our kids...they become more loud..."red lollipop son?? ADHD does not exist...just ask Tom Cruise doesn't he know everything...??? Smack kids I say..it will make you feel better

I could not agree more John, and Lord Piggott. Kids jacked up on Ritalin, Prozac, etc, all they need is a firm hand from some old time school marm. Total lack of discipline thats the problem with society in general. A few swift strokes of the cane is whats needed.

The kid has ADHD - attention deficiency. Has anyone stopped to consider that maybe he has made this up to get attention?!
Agree with the numerous people on here that ADHD is just another example of the country going mad with political correctness.
Bring back the cane. If the kid really has mental issues, then he/she will think nothing about going to the headmasters daily and getting a sore ar$e.
Anyone who is sane and just plain naughty will soon learn to behave themselves.

At the end of the day the poor kid has adhd its not his fault for playing up in class. The childs mum and dad are not to blame for this, a close family friend of mine has adhd and so does my cousin and they have no control over their childs behaviour. I think you should be given a child with adhd and then we will see if the parenting skills makes a difference to their behaviour!

Note that the mum has gone straight to the police taking her childs word for it without even getting the teachers or schools version of events!
Do we really think that the school would not let her enter the building? Why would they do that? Why would they not want to meet her to hear what her complaint is? Does anyone really actually think that a school would operate that way??
I feel Mrs Heron is not giving us the full story! And if she is not giving us the full story, can we believe that if her child? If he has so many disorders, did he actually understand what really happened or has he misread the whole thing?

Where the proof is the teacher actually said this. As a teacher I have had colleagues, who have had false allegations made against them, it can ruin their lives. I’m sorry but if this child does have all these conditions how do the other children in the class concentrate and get the support they need in the lesson.

I would like to make it quite clear that I do not get paid to run a support group- How dare you think that anyone who runs a group such as mine would do such a thing!
I began the support group because there was [bold]NO[/bold] support for families like mine. My 3 kids have ADHD & I was not prepared to sit down & be called a bad parent or other delightful comments that you charming lot label me & mine.
ADHD is genetic in 70% of cases 30% of ADHD is due to brain damage. The same gene defect is also found in schitzophrenia, bipolar disorder, autism, tourettes & several other mental health conditions.
I wish bad parenting was to blame, I wish additives & high sugar was to blame. Believe me if you have a child with ADHD then you have read every parenting book, tried every health suppliment & exclusion diet going.
Now many families are lucky enough to have only one affected child so their 'poor parenting' skills work perfectly for the non affected children - answer me why that is ????
If smacking or 'horse whiping' were affective then don't you think we would have tried it?
In ADHD there is a problem with the dopamine receptors in the brain, some sufferers have lots of dopamine , others are defficient. The ADHD brain is different & this can be seen on brain scans. The problem is that these people cannot utilise the dopamine. This makes them hyperactive or sluggish, impulsive & they have poor concentration or over focus on things that interest them. They find it very hard to filter out information & prioritise information. Patients prescribed ADHD medication who are rescanned after taking the medication show similar brain scans to non affected people.
ADHD is pervasive affecting all aspects of life for the sufferer. It is not an easy label & is only diagnosed by specialist paediatricians or psychiatrists.
Special ed is very difficult to get as the schools have to spend money on children with special needs & these are carefully assessed & reviewed to reduce the cost to the schools as the children improve- if they improve!!!!!
Everyone is entitled to their own opinion but before you name call please make sure you know what you are talking about.

I have been reading the cross exchange of opinions here with great interest and pleasure. It is good to see these issues back in the public forum. The provision of adequate resources for disabled children is a very important issue because every child has the right to recieve an acceptable level of education, reagrdless of thier disability. It is important though that an opinion comes with a degree of knowledge about the issue at hand. My son was dignosed with ADHD at 4 and Autistic Spectrum Disorder at 10. These dianosis' were made after years of intensive assessments by specialist consultants. There was no 'Oh yeah, must be ADHD'. That really doesn't happen. My son is in mainstream eduication but is statemented which means the school gets extra money to reflect his additional educational needs. I tried very hard to get him into a school with a specialised ASD unit without success but, saying that, social integration is as much an educational need as learning how to read or write. I am sure that, if Connors parents were given the opportunity to put him into an educational environment that suited his special needs, they would jump at the chance, as would I or any other parent who has a child with special needs but it just isn't there. I would ask everyone who has posted a negative statemetn to walk a mile in my shoes. Learn about ADHD, not from newspapres but from support groups, research specialists. if you care enough to post your comments, please care enough to keep an open mind and learn about us and our beautiful, wonderful children. Oh, and by the way, I am a single parent. I do not claim benefit, I work full time on a Statutory Flexible Working arrangment which means I can provide out of school care for my wonderful children. Despite paying over £3,000 per year in National Insurance, I paid to have my child assessed on a private basis. There are thousands of people in this country who can't afford to do that. So lets all please agree on one thing, any child, special needs or not, is entitled to have access to an appropriate education. Please don't penalise our children because there is insufficient governmental investment in our educational provisions to meet the needs of disabled children, whatever their disability. I wish Connor's parent all the best in resolving their complaint. Their child has at least three diagnosed disabilities that are classified under the Disability Discrimination Act, meaning they have legal rights which have been determined by our democratically elected politicians. I don't think anyone here is in a position to comment on the specific complaint as none of us were there. It is up to their formal complaints procedure to determine if there is any basis to the complaint but I must add taht, of the hundreds of families I know who live day and and day out fighting for our childrens rights (regardless of their disability)it is a very hard life. We wouldn't do it f we didn't love our children. I just want to give a huge 'thumbs up' to all those parents who take on the battle because it is you who make the world better for all of our children.
[bold]Your Lord, Erastus Theobald Piggott[/bold] [/quote] You really do have NO clue and just write whatever rubbish comes into your head.
Dyslexics are not less academic - quite the opposite. My son is dyslexic and with a bit of extra support got excellent GCSEs and now has a very demanding job with LAS. He could read before primary school and now reads avidly. Maybe you should too then you'd learn a few facts.

Ridiculous![/quote] I expect if there were any he might be. Have you actually looked at special needs provision in SE London? There is hardly any!

[/quote] Twit, he has attention DEFICIT that means he can not maintain attention it does NOT mean he tries to GET it!!!
