A GANG of armed youths have been sentenced after a violent confrontation with police.
Woolwich Crown Court heard that around 20 youths carrying a variety of weapons arrived on a bus in Charlton Road, Charlton, on June 27 last year.
They were wearing hoods or baseball caps, and one of them was wearing a stabproof and bulletproof jacket, the court heard.
Police were at the scene following an attack on a man inside the Kams convenience store just minutes earlier.
He was attacked by four other youths in the shop using hammers and knives. The prosecution alleged the two incidents were linked.
Judge Douglas Marks Moore said the group acted as a unit, moving towards police in "an extremely hostile and threatening way" and forcing officers to point CS gas canisters at them.
The group ran away and were chased by police who arrested 21 people.
Officers searched the route they had tried to escape down and found several knives, the end of a snooker cue and a golf club.
Sentencing 12 youths at Woolwich Crown Court yesterday (May 8), the judge said: "One witness said they had never seen such a violent incident in their lives."
He said: "It is quite clear from evidence by witnesses that gang violence has been a major problem in the Woolwich and Charlton area.
Eleven of the group had been found guilty of violent disorder following trials on February 22 and March 13.
Youth worker Muhammed Abdirahman, aged 21, of Nightingale Vale, Woolwich, was sentenced to 15 months in prison.
Mustafa Mohammed, aged 18, of Llanover Road, Woolwich Common, was sentenced to 18 months' detention in a young offenders' institution.
Harun Khaire, aged 18, of Rippon Road, Woolwich, and Saeed Abdi, aged 19, of Ramin Road, Blackheath, were both sentenced to 15 months' in a young offenders' institution.
Seven other boys, aged from 15 to 18, were given detention and training orders totalling 38 months.
Abdi Aziz Mohammed, aged 18, of Kashgar Road, Plumstead, the only boy to plead guilty to violent disorder, was sentenced to nine months in a young offenders' institution.
The boys' barristers had argued no violence had been committed and the stand-off with police lasted for less than a minute.
Chief Superintendent Christopher Jarratt, borough commander for Greenwich police, said afterwards: "There were amongst that group a number of key individuals and there were others who have been caught up in it and can themselves be seen as victims.
"I think it will have a positive effect on those individuals who may be considering enagaging in such violence.
"In addition I think it will reduce crime in those areas but the gang problem is something we can never take our eye off."
Four more people are due to be sentenced on June 13.
Three men pleaded guilty to GBH with intent for the Kams attack last October and were sentenced to a total of 19 years at Woolwich Crown Court.
Police have named one man, Abdi Ghele, aged 20, who is still wanted in connection with the Kams attack.

You forever hear that the parents of children that do this and that should be punished, well maybe we should deport the parents if they cant teach their children that this is the sort of thing that they've run away from and supposed to have left behind to start a new life. I have myself lived in bot Brixton and Peckham and now live in Bromley. I have to say I am absolutely sick to death of the immigrants in this country. We have people living here who plan to bomb, maim, kill, rob and God know's what else and we allow them to reside here and have certain individuals that think it's ok for them to stay here and that those of us who feel they should be beported are rascist bigots!!! i wonder would you have the same opinion if you or somebody you know were a victim of these people weather you'd maintain the same opinion. I have lived in Woolwich And Charlton all my life so i am a bit more in touch with reality than you are my Bromley friend, i chose to move out to sidcup because it was the best and safest thing for my young daughter and NO it isnt a Bronx thats why i moved there. I must apologise if you think I am in any way apologising for the actions of these criminals. Let me be absolutely clear about this now, I think the people involved in this incident are the lowest kind of scum imaginable and I am sorry that the sentences were not much, much harsher. They are common criminals and I absolutely comdemn their cowardly hunting in packs mentality. The fact that they are not white does not make their actions any better or any worse as far as I concerned. Sorry if I was not clear on this subject.
