POLICE are urging householders to be on the lookout of bogus charity collectors.

They say bags for donations are being left at residents' homes but they do not belong to legitimate charities.

Bags should state the charity's name, registered charity number and the authorised collection agent's name, address and telephone number.

Charities have also reported problems with organised groups stealing bags of donated clothing from outside homes before they can be collected by legitimate street collectors.

Bromley police are also asking people not to leave items outside charity shops when they are closed after reports of donations being stolen and sold by criminals.

Detective Inspector Jane Corrigan said: "It is absolutely disgusting there are people willing to take advantage of people's generosity."

Anyone with concerns should call the Charity Commission on 0870 333 0123.
