Driver escapes from overturned car
A BMW overturned after being in collision with a road sign on a traffic island this morning (March 27).
The driver of the car managed to get out before firefighters from Forest Hill arrived at the scene in Southend Lane, Sydenham.
He is believed to be suffering from cuts to his hands and is in shock.
The firefighters arrived at around 6.40am and left about 30 minutes later after clearing the road and washing away spilled fuel and oil.
It is not yet known how the accident happened.

Im not suprised that this has happend it was only a matter of time. The new trffic system on southend lane is dangerous and rubbish. It goes from one lane to two then back to one lane then all of the sudden there is a traffic island infront of you for no reason. Its a rubbish design there was nothing wrong with the way the road was. Yet again the council wasting the ever increasing tax payers money.

I totaly agree with the above comment. waste of tax payers money and accidents waiting to happen, it also makes it harder for emergancy vehicles to get through with those stupid bits that stick out

I wish the News-shopper would be a little more discerning in the way they write their articles. Definition of [italic][bold]collision[/bold][/italic]= the action of two moving vehicles, ships, aircraft, or other objects hitting each other.
SO HOW FAST WAS THE SIGN TRAVELLING AT THE MOMENT OF IMPACT?
Hope the drive makes a quick recoverery from his cuts and obvious shock at what must have been an extraordinary accident!

I agree the driver must have been speeding.
There are enough signs saying there are roadworks etc and surely the driver could see these, if not then they should not be driving!

There has been a new post put up right in the middle of the carriageway of the nearside lane. There was no warning when I went through there although doing under 20mph as going through the mixed up mess of the roadworks, its is suddenly in front of you. The only advanced warning was a single cone place 10 feet in front of it. I would say the road crews were having bets on how long it would last before someone hit it. I gave it 95% of being hit within a week. It may well be acceptable when its all finished, but while the roadworks are happening, this post is right in the middle of your lane. I get the feeling that some of the posters have not encountered this post and are imagining its a road sign post on the side of the road. [bold]It aint[/bold] !!

No no no guys, you've got it all wrong! The misprint in the report is not 'COLLISION' it is a 'road sign on a traffic island', they meant Virgin Island, no no, I mean Virgin airline. Therefore meant to read 'low flying Virgin Airline aircraft'. That is what probably collided with the BMW! Why else do you think there was so much fuel and oil spilled? Now that's what I call a real COLLISION!
