POLICE have arrested 14 men in a series of dawn raids following a violent football-related incident on a train.

A group of up to 40 men took part in the incident, which occurred at Sydenham railway station on September 1 at around 2.20pm.

The men boarded the train and began a series of random attacks on passengers within two carriages of the train.

The train was full of Charlton Athletic supporters traveling to a game at Crystal Palace as well as other members of the public.

A 24-year-old Charlton Athletic fan suffered a broken nose during the event and several other passengers were head butted, punched and verbally abused.

Offenders were also filmed on CCTV using bottles and cans as weapons.

A team of 150 officers has been assembled by British Transport Police (BTP) to investigate the matter.

BTP Detective Inspector Keith Bennett said: "A majority of the incident was captured on CCTV, which was used by police to identify a group of individuals, including known risk supporters.

"In the early hours of this morning police conducted a series of raids on 17 addresses at locations across south London, Sussex and Kent.

"Police executed search warrants and arrested 14 men on suspicion of violent disorder.

"The men are being interviewed by police in relation to these offences."

DI Bennett said the arrests should serve as a warning to football hooligans that violence and disorder on the railways will not be tolerated.

He said: "Members of the travelling public, including law-abiding football fans, have the right to travel in safety and without fear of being assaulted or abused."

Those arrested included a 29-year-old man from Dartford.

football fans my arse , a bunch of useless scum more like .... how about making the clubs accountable for their fans , ie: closed gates that will hit them where it hrts them most , their wallets they might do something about the scum who attend these riots , yes riots not games

Nerry, Southwark says...

This hardly has anything to do with the clubs directly, so fail to see how playing games behind closed doors as you suggest would achieve anything apart from exacerbating the situation...

this didn't take place anywhere near the ground. Heck, they haven't even mentioned whether it involved crystal palace fans going to the match. Football clubs can't patrol every single train in london. The people that deserve to be punished are the people involved (and yes, they are scum)

Sorry but where is the actual evidence in the report that a) This actually had anything to do with football and b). That Crystal Palace (A family club btw) had anything to do with it?

Crickey anon from erith, sounds like you've had your nose put out of joint by these events too. "riots not games"? - when was the last football game you went to?

Was the gun used during the attack? I hope not. It looks like one you use at a fun fair to win fish in bags with...

Most likely it was Palace fans, too much of a coincidence not to have been but there is the possibility it was unrelated or that it was football fans from another club. The have arrested 14 people and if found guilty they will be banned from all football grounds and will have to hand in their passports when England play abroad.

I cant see how you can made clubs responsible for the actions of their fans outside of the ground, it would open up a legal minefield.

Must be a sad, embittered Charlton supporter then Des. Sour grapes time is it?
Why is it everytime I look at comments on this web site you are in there writing how you know everything "for a fact". Get a life mate, you obviously got too much spare time!

Why would Crystal Palace supporters attack Charlton supporters? I didn't think there was any rivalry with them.
In fact, the only reason Charlton still exist is because Palace saved them by letting them play at Selhurst Park a few years ago.
Maybe this would have all been avoided had both the accused and victims remembered that.

Why the big fanfare. These type on incidents occur quite frequently, usually involving robbery and nothing is ever mentioned about it. The fact is that 'football hooliganism' is political and law enforcement are losing the battle against general street yobbos. Football thugs are an easy target because even the least brightest policemen will know where to find them, in, around and travelling to a football match. Also why did it take 150 officers to arrest 14? I have had enough of these so called football intelligence officers why can't thier resources be deployed to gathering intelligence on the Friday and Saturday night drunks who blight our towns with their violent anti social behaviour?

Des,

Your not the idiot who went on to talk sport saying that you were coming out of retirement are you?? All clubs have an unsavoury element but in all the yeard I've been taking my son to Palace the only trouble I've seen was Millwall fans and to be fair to them it was a minority. If the poluce can't control the trains how would you expect a football club? All you can do is punish the morons severely enough to deter anyone else.

Michael Fogarty, Kent says...
10:36pm Thu 8 Nov 07

We all know it was the palace vs charlton game and would of thought it was both sets of fans that were arrested, there wasn't a huge amount of trouble that day but there was some and it wasn't one sided.

From what was reported on the news last night it was Chorlton supporters who were arrested because of this clowning about on the trains...

Are you condoning the actions of these pathetic Charlton Athletic supporters?

Bob, Gillingham says...
11:19am Fri 9 Nov 07

Charlton 'fans' have been caught doing this before.
They were caught hitting women and children on buses and trains 2 years ago and were never called up on it. They also tried the same against Southampton supporters a few years ago, but when the men turned up to aid their attacked wives and children, they ran off. Surprise surprise.
All of their petty little boy mob (or bmob as they like to be called) should be rounded up and brought to justice. As most of them are too young to be tried in adult court, they should all be banned from attending any football games as it brings the sport into disrepute, again.

CAFC, Charlton says...

Bob you dont know what you are talking about , absolute drivel

Bob, Gillingham says...
11:49am Fri 9 Nov 07

Everything I wrote is true, and there have been many other incidents involving your 'fans' lashing out at innocent bystanders, usually women, children or the elderly.
One of the events I spoke of, I witnessed first-hand, the other was recalled to me by an old friend who would hardly make this sort of thing up, especially taking into account his past as a figure of authority and respectability.

It's hardly a surprise that you try and stick up for your petty little wannabe hooligans though is it "CAFC"?

I think your supposed supporters are a disgrace and should be punished accordingly.

CAFC, Charlton says...
1:46pm Fri 9 Nov 07

So 'BOB' , these so called Charlton fans got on buses AND trains did they 2 years ago and deliberately targetted the eldery , kids and woman , actually got CAUGHT doing so but NOTHING was done about it ? Hmmm , I think you and your old imaginary friend are up there with the fairys

Jimmy, London says...
1:51pm Fri 9 Nov 07

Don't forget the cowardly attack that the so called bmob launched on a woman in Hastings not so long ago. They beat her so hard that she's yet to return to work. I recall reading the article in the Argus. They are not fans, they are women beating idiots.

Bob, Gillingham says...
2:03pm Fri 9 Nov 07

They were caught on closed-circuit tv, and the Southampton incidents were reported by the media at the time.
Maybe you should check your 'facts' before calling others liars, although it doesnt surprise me coming from a poster calling themselves "CAFC".

Jimmy, you are absolutely correct, that attack in July was totally unforgivable + they should be jailed for a long time for it.

"Drunken football hooligans on a day trip from London beat a woman's face so savagely she may never work again.
A gang of 35 Charlton Athletic supporters on a boozy outing pounced on the victim as she tried to stop them assaulting a couple in the street..."They had documents in their possession with the club logo and which mentioned 'Charlton jolly boys' day out'.""
- The Argus

Sound familiar CAFC ?

And there's your supporters with the gall to accuse other people of being "Scum"..?

It is truly you lot who are the scum. You lot digust me to the core.

Not being funny mate but Charlton are hardly a team associated with violence.

Try Millwall, West Ham, & the worst offender (in London) according to a report recently Chelsea.

OK not all fans are angels, but Charlton is known as a family club.

Believe it or not so called family clubs like Charlton are actually quite bad. The worst offenders I am reliably informed by a football liason police officer is little old QPR. Apparently all the 'action' is outside of the premiership.

Charlton are not innocent by any means

BUT you do not attack families on train or the street.

If you want to fight which i dont agree with anyway

You fight with like minded consenting people. Dont get me wrong i dont agree with it but that is what i thought it was abaout

I know these things not because im invloved but growing up in the dark ages of football you get to see things week in week out and get to know the faces or the types that cause this sort of trouble.
