An American news commentator has caused a storm by claiming London is patrolled by “Muslim religious police” who beat people not dressed correctly.
Speaking on the Fox News channel, so-called terror expert Steven Emerson made the outrageous claim: “And parts of London there are actually Muslim religious police who beat and actually wound seriously anyone who doesn't dress according to Muslim religious attire."
Emerson also sparked controversy with comments about Britain's second city, claiming live on air that Birmingham was a "no-go" zone for non-Muslims.
He said: "There are actual cities like Birmingham that are totally Muslim, where non-Muslims just simply don't go in."
Fox News host Jeanine Pirro appeared to take Emerson's remarks at face value, making no attempt to correct him.
Emerson has apologised for "terrible error" regarding "the beautiful city of Birmingham" but has so far made no retraction of his London gaffe.
Following the weekend broadcast, people have taken to Twitter to poke fun at the US news channel using the #FoxNewsFacts hashtag.
