I am so happy to say that I have discovered The Bakery, a gem of a restaurant, set in the quiet and pretty village of Tatsfield, just over 20 minutes drive from the hustle and bustle of Bromley town centre.

This delightful restaurant has a charm of its own, bright and stylish and recently refurbished with an uncluttered, airy feel.

As you enter the restaurant you pass the colourful buzzing bar area that serves pre-dinner drinks as well as brasserie-style snacks, which then leads on to a relaxed and tastefully decorated dining room.

The restaurant serves modern British and European food with a number of menu options, including lighter bar snacks or fixed price table d’hote menus which change daily. My partner and I chose the latter menu which gave us a choice from seven dishes for each course, priced at £28.95 for three courses (£24.50 lunchtime).

To start I opted for grilled goat’s cheese salad with toasted pine nuts, nicely presented and generously portioned and my partner chose grilled fillet of smoked haddock topped with Welsh rarebit, with a tomato salad, which was delicately seasoned so you could still taste all the flavour of the fish.

For my main course I chose grilled fillet of sea bass with a smoked salmon and pesto sauce and my partner ordered roast rack of lamb with a celeriac mash and red wine jus, both served with a side dish of fresh vegetables and sautéed potatoes. Both dishes were excellent choices and can only be described as superb quality, deliciously tasty and artistically presented on unusually decorated plates.

With more than 70 varied and carefully chosen wines on the Wine List designed to complement the menu, we decided to accompany our meal with a light crisp French Chardonnay, £15.50 a bottle.

For dessert I chose iced mint and chocolate duo, a type of ice cream cake. We were told all ice creams are homemade so if you cannot see the flavour you like on the menu you can request your own. Finally, my partner opted for homemade steamed ginger pudding with a caramel sauce which he described as simply heavenly!

Owner Andrew Bond seems to have got the balance right, with friendly, attentive staff that are not overly intrusive, and daily, fresh produce providing a consistent but varied menu at value-for-money prices.

To sum up we had a delightful evening, the food was fresh and nicely presented, the service was polite and the restaurant had altogether a relaxed and unpretentious atmosphere.

Sunday lunch is a popular family affair with a more traditional menu at £17.50 for three courses or you may like to try the Brasserie menu, ideal for lunch or a lighter evening meal.

The restaurant is also the perfect venue for wedding celebrations, private parties and business events.
