This month it’s all about the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee – street parties, parades and concerts galore – sixty years of the ‘best of British’ under Queen Elizabeth II’s reign.

All this talk about the Jubilee has got those lovely people at GWI thinking back to the last 60 years of hair icons. Who’s had the most influential barnets in this diamond era? Jed Hamill gives us his verdict.

50s

Marilyn Monroe
At the start of Queen Elizabeth’s reign there was one name on everybody’s lips – Marilyn Monroe. Men wanted her and women wanted to be her. She was curvy, feminine and vivacious. The Marilyn was the most requested look of the 50s. The shoulder length blonde bombshell, beautifully styled with finger waves just screamed siren starlet – a beautiful look which still remains iconic today.

Audrey Hepburn
Still loved today for her roles in Breakfast at Tiffany’s, Sabrina and My Fair Lady, Audrey Hepburn is definitely one of the great all time icons of the hair world. Her beehive is still one of the most requested up-dos even now. A beautiful woman with elfin features, Audrey’s look was sophisticated and feminine. She knew exactly how to make the best of herself.

60s

Mary Quant
The sixties saw a whole new wave of hairdressing come to the forefront, all at the hands of one man, Vidal Sassoon. The man who gave us ‘the bob’ and literally revolutionised hairdressing created a legacy like no other. Mary Quant, the fashion designer who was instrumental in the ‘mod’ movement sported one of Vidal’s precision cuts and began a whole new legacy of her own. The sixties was certainly a time for change in the style stakes!

Brigitte Bardot
Soft, dishevelled and timeless, actress Brigitte had the style that women craved. The texture, shape and overall feminine look is still seen season upon season on the international runways and will never date. The famous half up, half down do characterised the era – he locks were just beautiful and so was she.

70s

Farrah Fawcett
The most well-known do of the 70s was definitely Farrah’s flicks. Made iconic by TV series Charlie’s Angels, women everywhere wanted voluminous locks just like these independent women. Typical of the disco era, hair was big, layered, feminine and lustrous. This look saw the introduction of the blow dry and started women styling their own hair at home.

Joanna Lumley
In the 70s she was more Bond girl than Ab Fab. Joanna Lumley’s bowl cut was highly saught after following her role as Emma Peel in The Avengers. Her look was androgynous which made thousands of men fall in love with the former model and hundreds of women want to copy this short, soft, feminine and totally modern style.

80s

Debbie Harry
In the 80s there was one woman on the music scene who redefined the rock chick, Debbie Harry from Blondie. Her look was a dishevelled, just-got-out-of-bed hair that has echoed for generations since.

Kim Wilde
She was definitely the woman with the most diverse hair of the 80s. Kim Wilde had everything from a mullet to a perm but her look was always loved by so many. She was sassy, sexy and most of all iconic.

90s

Jennifer Aniston
Following the rising popularity of TV show Friends in the 90s, there was one do that everyone from teenagers to young professionals were asking for - the ‘Rachel’. Jennifer Aniston’s soft, textured shag screamed modern woman. Every woman seems to be reached for her hot-brush to get this look picture perfect.

Kate Moss
In the 90s a whole new wave of music was big as grunge emerged onto the scene. Bands like Nirvana, Garbage and Hole brought with them a whole new culture and style. One celeb who was known for the grunge look was supermodel of the moment Kate Moss who at the time was dating Johnny Depp. This look was matte, dishevelled but at the same time hip, youthful and uber cool.

00s

Victoria Beckham
Many a trend has descended directly from ‘Beckingham Palace’ but the look that definitely sticks out for the noughties was the ‘pob’. A variation on Vidal Sassoon’s bob, the pob was copied by women all over the world. It was a strong, structured look with a soft feminine edge. This graduated bob fast became one of the most requested styles of all time.

Alexa Chung
Bringing a whole new meaning to the bedhead look, television presenter Alexa Chung was, and still is, a style icon of the 21st century. Her fashionista ways even won Alexa the role of head presenter of Gok’s Fashion Fix on Channel 4. She looked fantastic with her rock chick style then and she still does now.

Caroline Flack
The biggest trend of the tens so far has been the dip-dye colour and leading the way is Xtra Factor presenter Caroline Flack. Her dip dyed locks made their debut on the show in 2011 and Flack has set off fashionistas all over the country copying her boho, rock chick look with a beautiful sunkissed edge. We just love it and Clynol have even launched their very own collection in its honour using the Viton colour range called Tonal Fusions which is available in-salon now!

Fearne Cotton
Stylista and fashion icon Fearne is definitely showing the ladies how it’s done in the in the 21st century. Her long bob or ‘lob’ was one of the most requested styles of 2011 and her pink colour has also had the columns set alight with tone shot pastels being a key trend for Spring/Summer 2012. Fearne always looks great and we just can’t wait to see what she does next.
