ALL music lovers have heard of Tamla Motown. When ex-boxer Berry Gordy's record shop went belly up, he borrowed some money from his sister and set up, arguably, the world's most famous record label.

All the big names recorded on TM - "Little" Stevie Wonder, The Four Tops, The Temptations, The Supremes, Gladys Knight, Jimmy Ruffin and so on.

Dancing in the Streets at The Churchill last week offered a tribute to all those wonderful artists as well as the mighty Marvin Gaye.

Sublime performances ensured all the character and funkiness of Motown survived. Of course, the title song of the show was a hit (three times pop pickers) for Martha and the Vandellas and this cast were just magic at sounding and looking like the stars. And the costumes were fabulous too.

Performers Donna Hines and Courtney Buchanan deserve special mention - they were both outstanding.

Does anyone know why Tamla Motown is so called? Motown refers to Detroit - motor city. But the Tamla part...? Blame the lovely Debbie Reynolds. Gordy wanted the name Tammy from Debbie's smash hit film of the same name in which she sang Tammy's in Love. But the name had already been registered, so he came up with Tamla. It must be true - it was in the show programme.

Just like a train, this show stops at all the right stations and upgrades us to first class. Get a return ticket if you can.
