Your space: Little Shop of Horrors at The Churchill, Bromley

Geoff Billingsley enjoyed Little Shop of Horrors at The Churchill, Bromley, so much he saw it twice.

This Little Shop of Horrors production fresh from the West End has a brand new cast of big names. The show has been packing them in at The Churchill.

Damian Humbley plays Seymour, who works for Mr Mushnik (played by former Doctor Who star Sylvester McCoy) in his plant and flower shop.

Also working for Mushnik is Audrey, played by Clare Buckfield, who played the young daughter in TV’s 2.4.Children.

She is knocked about by her dentist boyfriend Orin, played by mad Trevor from EastEnders, Alex Ferns. I must say, with all due respect to the other cast members, Ferns is quite brilliant. He likes to empathise with his patients in the sense he takes as much gas himself as he administers, sometimes more.

I am sure you'll be familiar with the story - Seymour's little pot plant, Audrey II, seems to thrive on drops of blood and gains weight by the minute. This makes for good business as people queue round the block to see this amazing specimen.

The set is cleverly made out for the scene changes and plant growth and when Audrey II graduates to eating humans, Seymour has to supply meals for his business companion. It is here the plant sings the hilarious Feed Me (Git It). Clive Rowe as the voice of Audrey II is truly brilliant.

You won't see a funnier scene than when Seymour visits Orin in his dentist surgery and attempts to do away with him, motivated by his desire for the lovely Ms Buckfield as Audrey. And, I can't blame him.

Songs which stand out include Somewhere That's Green, Suppertime and Grow for Me.

It can be quite tongue-in-cheek but there’s nothing to worry mums and dads here. It’s a show more than fit for anyone aged seven and over.

This is quite honestly the best modern musical I have ever seen at The Churchill. So much so I went back and saw it again. Catch it on tour if you get a chance.
