A flat stomach, firm bum and toned legs would be most new mummies’ perfect Mother’s Day present.

But going to the gym with a new-born in tow isn’t an option, and while Victoria Beckham can give birth and instantly spring back to a size 6, it just doesn’t work like that for us regular human beings.

Luckily for ladies in Greenwich, Running Mummies is dedicated to helping new mothers keep fit, as well as providing a powerful support network of friends.

This unique group invites mums to exercise in Greenwich Park with their babies every Thursday morning at 10.15am.

Michelle Brooks Evans, who runs R&M Fitness with partner Rebecca Willcox, said: “When you’ve got a child it’s very difficult to get out and do something for yourself.

“Professional women have babies and think ‘what am I going to do now?’ some people suffer postnatal depression, but there is always a mum who has had less sleep than you – it’s a really big support network.”

But it’s not all about running.

Around 30 women join the class – which is the only licensed postnatal fitness course in the park - and, depending on when they gave birth, will do a workout which suits them.

There is no obligation to subscribe and it costs £6 per hour-long session.

Mum-of-four Michelle, 41, added: “We do work with resistance bands, walking, pushing buggies uphill, floor-work – it’s all on the mums’ terms.”

Now in its sixth year, Running Mummies members include lawyers, nurses, cake makers and doctors.

Rebecca Thomson, founder of parents’ website Greenwich Mums, attends with her two-year-old twins Daisy and Matilda.

The 32-year-old said: “It’s a fantastic idea and so unique – I don’t think there’s anything else like it in London and mums love them.

“I’ve definitely seen a difference in my figure – with twins I have to work that little bit harder to push them.

“But it’s had a bigger impact on my mental health than anything else.

“They get brilliant reviews on Greenwich Mums.”

And Lee Turner-Conn, 37, joined last month with her babies Fletcher and Clementine.

She said: “I was pregnant with twins and barely even walking towards the end of the pregnancy.

“I was worried about exercising because I had a caesarean and I hate running but they put us into groups and people run and walk at different paces so you’re constantly pushing your buggy next to someone else.

“The best thing is they make you feel secure about exercising after pregnancy.

“It’s quite a riot.”

This Wednesday (March 7) Michelle is starting new class Bumps, Babies and Buggies for pregnant women and mums in Oxleas Wood.

She said: “This is hopefully the first of many such classes for very new mums that are maybe a bit apprehensive about getting out with a new baby or it is their first foray back into exercise.

“There will be some cardio work, a lot of all body toning exercises and mat work, and there is also an outside gym in the woods that we can use.”

The first four weeks are free and sessions are on Wednesdays at 10am.
