Surreal Australian comic Sam Simmons, who last year won the Foster’s Edinburgh Comedy award following three previous nominations, is one of the star names heading to Greenwich Comedy Festival at the National Maritime Museum from July 26 to 31.

We found out what you can expect...

What are you most looking forward to about Greenwich Comedy Festival?

Greenwich meantime, fish and chips and all things nautical.

You’ve performed in this part of London a fair bit before, I believe, what do you like about it (if anything)?

Definitely the fish and chips

How does an Australian audience differ from an English one – do you have to change your material at all?

Yes, I tend to go harder on you guys, you weirdly love being abused, it's that whole Churchill in fishnets kinda thing.

Where is the best place in the world you have performed?
Oslo Norway, unbelievable, beautiful, clever and they come with the expectation of having a good time.

You’re known for your surrealist approach – where do those wild ideas come from? Does it come naturally to you?
Yes, its just what I think is funny, I’m a very greedy performer that way. Its all for me!

I saw you a few years ago batting bread rolls into the audience (and it was awesome), have you ever had an idea for something in your performance that was too ‘out there’? Or something you dropped from your performance because it was just too weird?

Never, I always try it once.
PS: I don’t abuse food or any bread anymore.

What’s the biggest challenge you’ve faced in your career to date?

Translating what I do to television.

What’s your fondest memory from being on stage?

I think the best singular experience I’ve had was in Melbourne this year playing a large prestigious venue with my mate Dave Quirk.

You won the Foster’s Edinburgh Comedy award for your show 'Spaghetti for Breakfast' this year. Why do you think it did so well?
I guess it had a very personal element which people love, they love weepie.

Do you have any pre-show rituals?
I sacrifice a live duck.

What would you be doing if you weren’t a comedian?
Zookeeper for sure!
