War in Ukraine could not stop opera coming to Dartford thanks to an award-winning producer.

Ellen Kent was caught just six miles from the bloody conflict while preparing with the Ukrainian National Opera in Kharviv.

She was warned by the British Foreign Office not to travel due to fatalities, bombing and Kidnappings but managed to transport complete sets, props and costumes out of the area.

She has now brought together a new company which includes Ukranians, Moldovans and Russians to put on La Traviata at the Orchard Theatre on May 3.

Ellen said: “I know it sounds like a cliche but really - the show must go on.

“I was in Odessa in rehearsals for Butterfly in 2005 when the Orange Revolution broke out and I just thought, here we go again.”

The 70-strong company for the adaptation of Verdi’s opera also includes local dances, children and adults.

Ellen said: “As ever my productions are huge and will be a feast for the eyes as well as the ears. After all we've been through bringing them to the stage, it's definitely been worth it.”
