Greenwich Theatre is competing with the big guns from the West End and Broadway after being nominated for a hat trick of prestigious awards.

The theatre, in Crooms Hill, has been shortlisted for the big prize, Best Theatrical Venue, by award-winning website Broadway World, which covers theatre in London, New York and around the world.

The theatre’s production of The Last Five Years bagged the other two nominations; in the Best Actress category for Danielle Hope and Best Director for Katie Peskin.

Greenwich Theatre’s executive and artistic director James Haddrell said: “You would expect the nominations to be almost entirely from Broadway and from the West End in the UK, so it is a huge achievement for us to have three nominations on their list.”

He added: “We won an award before with the co-production of 'Rent', but 'The Last Five Years' is our own show so it is even more exciting for us. It really shows what we can do, what we're about.”

James sees the awards as proof of how important it is for Greenwich to have 'a proper theatre'.

He said: "We've always known that audiences have a special affection for coming to Greenwich but it's never really been recognised in a tangible way. This nomination does that and we couldn't be more pleased.
