A highly respected theatre company is set to bring an urgent exploration of theatre’s depiction of money through the ages to Deptford.

As a unique counterpoint to a show about capitalism, the people of Deptford are being asked to host an actor in exchange for free tickets and a credit in the programme.

The show, Price of Money, is at The Albany from September 16 to 20 and is by the Belarus Free Theatre whose fans include Tom Stoppard, Steven Spielberg, Jude Law and Kevin Spacey.

The New York Times described them as ‘one of the most powerful underground companies on the planet’.

The company was founded in 2005 under Europe's last surviving dictatorship and is one of the most outspoken critics of Belarus’s repressive regime.

Many company members have served time in prison, lost their jobs, gone into hiding or been exiled.

Joint artistic director Natalia Kaliada said: “A long time ago Deptford was part of the pilgrimage route from Canterbury to London, and we want to get to know those people from Deptford who continue to seek out the unknown. We hope to meet them at the Albany which has become a beacon for those who seek something new in their lives.”

The Price of Money is at The Albany from September 16 to 20. Tickets cost £10 to £16. Go to thealbany.org.uk or call 020 86924446. E-mail supportus@thealbany.org.uk for more information on hosting an actor.
