Protect your hair from damaging winds and prevent annoying static this winter with tips from the team at Graham Webb International.

  • The most important products to use in winter are those which contain anti-oxidants - vitamins A, C and E. These will protect the hair against environmental and wind damage.
  • Regular salon treatments are a must - indulge your locks at least once a month to give them a fighting chance of surviving winter healthy. Leave-in conditioners are also vital, as they will help to prevent split hairs and protect against wind damage.
  • Gone are the days where masses of hairspray were used to keep styles perfectly in place. This season it's all about moveable hair, so ask your hairdresser to recommend products and styles that will allow your tresses to move and survive wind without looking like you've gone out in a hurricane.
  • Static can be a big problem in winter. It is encouraged by moving from hot to cold and then to hot conditions again, so try to avoid doing this as much as possible.
  • Don't over-dry your hair as this allows static to form more easily. There is a very specific point when hair goes from wet to dry, and the closer you can get to this point the longer the blow-dry will last.
  • Use a leave-in conditioner like Clynol's Dream balancing conditioning spray to help maintain moisture levels. A very light spray of Dream on dry hair will help to calm any static down.

Your questions answered

Q. I often highlight my dark blonde hair, but am considering going brunette for winter. However, I am very pale so am worried a dark shade may wash me out. How do I decide what shade would suit me?

A. The best thing to do is to take along some pictures of shades you like to your hairdresser and ask for their opinion. You could try a soft honey brown to ease yourself into going brunette, or try bitter chocolate or mocha.
