Hair up has to be the favourite party piece and a current hottie is a variation on a French plait. But don't worry, it needn't be a headache to do. From Tinseltown to catwalk show the rule is that there are no rules - put it up however you want!

A cool chignon can be Jennifer Aniston smooth and sophisticated especially when worn with discreet jewels or ornaments to catch the light, or go softly tousled and messed up à la Mischa Barton for a more light-hearted insouciance.

The team at Graham Webb International gives quick and effective tips to achieving this A-list look:

  • Get the style: Draw hair off your face (using your hands if you want a fresher, looser feel, or using a brush for a more polished effect) and hold it into a ponytail near the nape of the neck.

Without securing the ponytail, twist it up and lay the twist in a vertical line going up the centre back of your head.

Holding the hair in place with one hand, use your free hand to push pins down the side edge of the tail to secure it firmly.

Finally take the loose ends of hair and gently tuck them back under the edge of hair you've created until they are all blended in.

Use a finishing spray for extra hold and confidence to last all party long.

Want to move it on?: Don't stress about creating an ultra smooth finish. The did this at home' look is very now, and loose tendrils curling into the neck and around the face can be flattering and romantic.

Carefully pull small sections free and maybe tuck fallen ends behind your ear or loop back and hold with a pretty pin.

Your questions answered

Q. I have just moved into the area and don't know many people. Can you give me any tips on how to find the best hairdresser to suit me? I really don't know where to start!

A. This is a terrifying task, but here are my tips.

Firstly have a look around, including through local pages or on the internet and compile a list of half a dozen salons that you like the look of, either by their advertising, imagery or salon appearance.

Secondly call each one and enquire about free consultations, see what you think of each one after talking to them. Most salons are more than happy to give you a full consultation with no obligation and you can get a real feel for the place, the staff and you can have a look around at the clients' and staff's hair to see the quality of the work.

Finally a good tip is to look out for someone with a haircut or colour that you really like, either in work, in a bar or on the high street and ask them where they have their hair done. Good luck!
