By the time you read this, the argument I witnessed at The Fox will be a long-forgotten distant memory for the four youths it involved. So, I thought the very least I could do was try and preserve the essence of it in this review.

It started with too much lager and answered the age-old question of ‘what are beer terraces used for?’ Put simply, one of the teenagers used the terrace at the Keston boozer to throw up over when his friends made him down a shot of gold tequila after drinking a few pints.

(I’m just glad no-one was sitting in the garden underneath at the time.) They learned binge drinking does not pay and their heated ‘debate’ about why they had been asked to leave the pub was better than anything I had seen on TV for ages.

If only they had chosen real ale, The Fox had one of the best selections I have seen for weeks.

News Shopper: Pub review: The Fox, Heathfield Road, Keston

Out of Flowers Original, Bombardier, London Pride, Westerham Special Bitter Ale 1965 and Brakspear bitter I chose the first and the last two and was fairly pleased with all three.

The Flowers (£2.20) managed to be rich and velvety and refreshing with a somewhat fruity aftertaste.

My Brakspear (£2.90) had the characteristic bitterness and malty taste to it but I think it may have been a little past its prime.

Westerham Special Bitter Ale 1965 (£2.90) was the most local of all the beers and it’s always good to support producers close to home — especially if they produce refreshingly hoppy drinks like this.

With such a good selection of drinks, it is definitely worth a stop off on a countryside walk at any time of the year.
