This week I felt brave enough to take on anything, which brought me to The Ship.

My initial feelings after seeing the outside were fear and trepidation, with its glaring pink exterior doing little to alleviate my suspicions.

However, upon entering I found a warm and friendly atmosphere.

Choices of pints were very basic, I opted for a Stella, but the prices were so generous I didn't mind.

The pint was perfectly fine for a warm Saturday afternoon and at £2.70 who could argue with that?

In fact, I found the beer to be far better than what I'd usually pay double the price for if I was visiting the city.

The locals were mainly blokes, the male to female ratio was about 15:1, but the atmosphere was very jovial with a real community feel about the place.

It seemed like a place where everybody knew each other yet I wasn't made to feel like an outsider.

One of the bar staff even apologised to our group for one of the local’s poor hygiene, stating that soap was cheaper than beer.

There were around eight large screens showing Sky Sports and a couple of decent pool tables to keep us entertained with the promise of a live DJ and disco later on if we had our dancing shoes on.

We didn't and after a few more jars we moved on but for anyone looking for a cheap refreshing stop near the common, you could do a lot worse than The Ship.
