Summer is (nearly) here so PubSpy decided to head out to the country for some fresh air.

And if you can find me a prettier village in this part of the world than Eynsford then the beer's on me.

At this time of year, with the flowers in bloom, it’s as picturesque as ever and I went in search of some Kentish hospitality to match the scenery.

That’s a high bar to set and, although the Malt Shovel was pleasant, it couldn’t quite reach it.

Clearly, I’ll excuse the building work on the outside. I know this to be an exceedingly pretty, approaching 300 year old building and it’s commendable that it’s being given some TLC too.

Taking a step inside on a quiet day, the service was fine but not overwhelmingly welcoming.

Old dark wooden beams, a giant fireplace and ornate timbers, brickwork and windows all give the place a kind of regal, medieval feel. But the games machine plonked in the middle and Magic FM blaring did jar just a tad.

Then again, the sound of silence or lute music would have been crap too, so maybe I’m too picky on that.

For a Free House, the beers were surprisingly limited.

There were the regulars, plus a nice cider, on tap as well as a couple of Sharps offerings, one of which was Doombar.

I had the other, a pale ale called Atlantic (£3.80).

Given our county’s booming craft and microbrewing scene, it would have been nice to see a couple of Kentish beers on offer. Perhaps I just missed them.
