LOVERS of four-legged creatures will enjoy the Chatterton Arms.

While Andy Murray was battling back from two sets down in the last 16 at Wimbledon, there was a crowd around the TV that sits commandingly above the bar.

But they weren’t watching the nail-biting match. No, it was the nags.

According to a sign outside, they were showing the tennis – but I couldn’t see it.

So dedicated was a section of the pub to the sport of kings that they even had a pot full of those tiny blue pens you find at the bookies, or Argos.

You won’t find many kings in here, mind.

The punters were a good mix of post-work locals of all varieties and some, I understand, have been coming here for 35 years.

It looks a bit like it may have been last decorated 35 years ago, but is still a nice place to sit with a pint.

It is light and spacious with plenty of tables, a book exchange, a large area with a pool table and even a good sized garden with bouncy castle.

The charming lady behind the bar was incredibly patient despite the fact I didn’t know what to drink (a pint of Courage’s Directors slipped down nicely) and that I had neglected to get cash out.

She made small talk and was even concerned that I was opting for only a packet of crisps after the disheartening revelation they weren’t serving food.

Dogs are welcome in the Chatterton Arms.

The most exciting bit of my visit was a disagreement between a bulky brown and white dog which I imagined to be called Bullseye and a smaller, blueish curly-haired dog.

But it didn’t last.

The second most-exciting moment was when another dog, the size of a horse walked in.

And to think I could have been watching the tennis.

The Chatterton was a touch stale but is clearly great locals pub and has all the bells and whistles.
