Power of Drawing A selection of works from Lewisham Arthouse's current exhibition which asked female artists for broad interpretations of drawing. Pages: (2) |1| 2
Sally Crowley - Molly Using felt pen, Sally Crowley drew Molly. Crowley's piece, clearly interested in the diversity and possibility of mark making, again explores women's place in the home. There are a lot of pet images in Power of Drawing.
Amanda Francis - In Crowd #8 In Crowd takes up the entire facing wall as you enter the gallery and, it could be argued, is the poster work for Power of Drawing.
The use of line is very traditional but it still comes across as very contemporary, because it is so simple. Also, depicting a woman reaching for the stars seems very appropriate for this collection.
Sara Willet - Untitled (close up) This close up section shows the interesting effect which comes from gauging acrylic on board.
Sara Willet - Untitled This large-scale work, acts as one of two focal points for the exhibition. Created by gauging layers of acrylic on board, it represents the new and outside-the-box approaches to drawing in the collection.
Tina Westerhof - Feeding Your Soul Feeding Your Kids Embroidery and embellishment give Westerhof's piece a quirky, fashionable feel. The artist - as you will see from her other Power of Drawing contributions - enjoys using innovative and alternative techniques to create art which explores family relationships.
Imelda Almquist - Hindu Lady in Bangladesh The use of colour for this mixed media on paper piece really stands out in the gallery. Unlike the other works using colour, which rely on close inspection, Almquist's piece exudes an instant air maturity.
Junko Sano - From the Cave Interestingly, From the Cave is an inkjet print of pastel drawings; taking a traditional drawing form and then reproducing it with modern tools. It acts as a rare splash of confident colour in an otherwise black and white dominated exhibition.
Corinne Zak - Madonna Even sculpture can be applied to drawing, as Corinne Zak has proved with her humourously-titled basque. Madonna was created using clear resin with glass fibre adhesive membrane.
Polly Hallam - Fishole Fishole is a real alternative take on the idea of drawing using modern tools - inkjet print- for an abstract effect.
Jean Cozens - Pony Tail Leisure loves the flowing, Matisse-like lines created here by Jean Cozen's string drawing. The pony tail gives it a modern feel
Sheila Anderson Ward - Winter Sunlight, Oxleas Wood Sheila used charcoal and chalk pastel to recreate the incredibly life-like light seen here illuminating one of the south east's most beautiful natural gems; Oxleas Wood.
Charlie Ward - Shadow This piece is one of eight ink-jet prints. Finished with a window-like frame, Shadow is just one of many contributions depicting the view from windows or out of a home; an interesting theme Power of Drawing has.
