Blind puppy found tied-up in bag inside Bexleyheath telephone box

A BLIND puppy has been found tied-up in a bag and dumped inside a Bexleyheath telephone box.
Dog-walker Sharon Byrne found the abandoned dark brown Staffordshire bull terrier in a phone box at the end of Cumberland Drive on the morning of April 21.
The puppy – who has been named Stevie the Wonder pup by the RSPCA – was found by Mrs Byrne’s ex-police sniffer spaniel, Wilko, inside a green Marks and Spencer bag.
She said: “He was very weak when I found him - his eyes were shut and he was almost lifeless.
“I think he had been there overnight and almost suffocated.”
Mrs Byrne only became aware Stevie was inside when her dog started to sniff around the outside of the telephone box.
She believes the puppy, which is about seven-weeks-old, would have died had her dog not found him.
Stevie was taken home by Mrs Byrne where she warmed him up, fed him and sought specialist treatment from a vet.
She added: “It’s disgusting anyone could dump such a vulnerable animal and leave it to a slow, lingering death.
“He was a nervous wreck to begin with and very distressed of humans but his confidence is growing.”
Two weeks later, Stevie is still being cared for by Mrs Byrne.
She has attached bells to her own dog’s shoes so Stevie knows where he is and can follow him.
The RSPCA is seeking information from anyone who knows who dumped the dog.
RSPCA inspector Ellen Thomas said: “It looks like someone abandoned this poor puppy because he is blind and would’ve been difficult to sell.
“It’s unbelievably cruel – he would’ve died cold and hungry in that phone box if he had not been found.”
