The countdown to the London Olympics in 2012 begins in Greenwich this weekend with the borough's arts organisations celebrating the launch of the four year Cultural Olympiad.

We've picked some events from the programme which proves the games can be about more than just sport.

There is an early evening extravaganza of dance, theatre and music on Sep 26. The people behind the visual feast which is Greenwich & Docklands International Festival will be leading an open up and light up' themed, flame-lit, procession from the Old Royal Naval College through Greenwich Park.

Blackheath born, country and blues legend Albert Lee (pictured above) will appear live with Hogan's Heroes as part of gDA's The Weekender event on Sep 27. The four-day celebration of music and dance (Sep 25 to Sep 28) marks a special return for Lee as his father and grandfather helped build Borough Hall.

Kids! Don't miss the mini olympics on Sep 28 at National Maritime Museum from 11.30am.

Greenwich Theatre and subject2change theatre company recently joined forces to create, Utopia? an open-air production celebrating the history of Well Hall Pleasaunce, Eltham within its grounds on Sep 28. History meets sensory spectacle via circus skills, fire-breathing, music and theatrical soundscapes.

There will be a free performance of Urban Dreams, London Bubble's participatory theatre production, on Sunday evening. The show has an intergenerational cast (including residents from Lewisham) and uses instrumental music, projections, choral movement and puppetry to tell stories that draw on the reflections and experiences of new Londoners.

Various events at locations in and around Greenwich, Sep 25 to Sep 28. For details, call Greenwich Tourist Information Centre on 0870 608 2000.
