The burlesque revival has finally filtered down from the city into south east London. Kerry Ann Eustice gets the inside information from performer Agent Lynch

AS FAR as the most unlikely, never-going-to-happen, line-ups go (think Radiohead and Girls Aloud or Dane Bowers and Posh, oh no, sorry that already happened), surely Chas and Dave supported by a troupe of burlesque performers, would deserve the title.

Well prepare to hand over the trophy Posh, because performance troupe HMS Burlesque and the iconic mockney duo will be sharing the Amersham Arms stage this weekend, as part of an equally bizarre, alternative new year's club night.

HMS Burlesque founder, Agent Lynch (aka Kate Rawlinson) - who you'll be seeing in music videos for both The Hoosiers and Elbow soon - sheds some light on the mixed-bag bill "Chas and Dave appeal to the student crowd and burlesque has also become popular with this group," she said.

"People are moving away from superclubbing and large-scale nights out and are looking for something more intimate and varied." - Agent Lynch

Burlesque in New Cross is becoming something of a regular feature and The Amersham Arms has already enjoyed success with the popular club night, Ska-burlesque.

"People are moving away from superclubbing and large-scale nights out and are looking for something more intimate and varied," Agent Lynch said of the revival in burlesque's appeal.

As well as Agent Lynch's 1960s-inspired act, which includes tongue-in-cheek Bond Girl and Barbarella homages, will be showgirls Kitty Bang Bang and Beatrix von Bourbon and kitsch chat show-style host Rod Lightning.

"Engaging the audience and making them laugh, that's the most important thing," Agent Lynch added. "Women come up to me and say they've enjoyed it. It's good for them to see we're not all catwalk models. Burlesque makes people feel confident."

Alternative New Year's Eve. Amersham Arms, New Cross Road. March 21. 8pm to 2am. 020 8692 2047.
